Media Player and XviD codec problems

I had to have a reinstall of my operating system not too long ago and the new one came with a newer version of media player that would not work properly with many videos that are in the XviD format as well as with some audio codecs. I uninstalled media player and it dropped back to a previous version(9 I think) but it still has some XviD and audio problems even though I have installed all the XviD codecs I had used before that worked great. It also doesn't like AAC audio even though I found and installed a codec, but it only works the first time after installation and then has to be installed again to play another video. This also impacts a converter/splitter that I use a lot because it uses media player. Anyone have any suggestions or know where to get Media player 8 or some choices of XviD and ACC codecs? Thanks.

I would download VideoLan, since you won't need codecs to play a majority of videos. Up until recently, I would have suggested getting a codecs pack, but I've since learnt that using the codecs can cause more problems than it does solve.

I vlc and it plays most things. My problem is that my best converter/splitter uses media player and if it does play properly, for instance no audio, than it doesn't convert or split properly.
