I love fishing, but never caught a fish that weight above 1KG. Why?

My fishing rod is always in my car, every time I go for holiday on the beach I always find some times to fish.
problem is, I never once caught a fish that weight above 1KG, not even half. All I got was about the size of three fingers. I am jealous when people can catch big fish or some stingrays fishing from the beach.
What am I doing wrong?? I have spent a lot buying good fishing rods and gears. Any advice from pro?

My hubby is a big fan of fishing, he always has the fishing rod in his car too. He always keep an eye on the time, tide and stuff to catch the keeper. He has been fishing lately and has caught 6 keepers already!

Hmm... woke up early because people say the fish are hungry early in the morning before noon.. no luck. still baby fish!

Do you use Live or Fake bait. I have found that if you are going to catch any kind of decent fish that Live bait is the way to go. Also early morning is good but so it right a dusk or a little after, as it seems all the little peon fish hide and the big guys come out to hunt the peons that do not hide. This is where the live bait comes in handy...it is a little peon fish. So if you keep catching peon fish, put them in a basket and when you have enough of them, put a larger hook on and put the hook into there mouth and make the hook come out right past there skull and not thru the spine. This will make it so that the fish will still swim and when the larger fish come out they will see the fish as a crippled peon and think...humm an easy meal.

Thank you so much Bryan! Actually I did catch a big fish last week. It was as big and as long as my arm. I was really happy and it is my record until now. I always go fishing alone so I am used to my way. Last week I went with 3 friends and 1 of them put on the live bait for me.
At first I wondered why they were using one whole prawn because I always use small cut pieces (of prawn, cuttlefish or worm), he said "because you want to catch big fish".
That was the first time I saw my rod really bent because I got fish! Thank you anyway for your info because I always got peon fish and never used them as bait. Have a nice day!!
