what are your views on mono sodium glutamate?

mono sodium glutamate - Ajinomoto is the more popular brand of MSG in our local market today.

What is your take on using MSG on food? I know it's been banned in some parts but recently, MSG (or Umami) is slowly becoming popular again where I'm from. There are TV, billboard and print ads that have even come out claiming that MSG is good for the body. The ads even talk to homemakers, asking if they are in fact "umami mommies" --like it's the best thing to happen to food for your kids. I'm still iffy about it as my husband and I always experience dry mouths and throats right after eating at Chinese restaurants that include MSG in their dishes.

MSG is also called as Agino Moto, well there are many mysterious things that are said about MSG, some say it is made out of bones, some say it is a kind of chemical and some say it is salt.......but then yes I have read and heard that it does have adverse effects on the body and hence it is not advised for children below the age of 12, lactating mothers are said to stay away from it......so all in all it is said that too much of Agino Moto can harm your body.....but then it gives out the real flavor in Chinese food, try having these dishes without MSG and the taste would just be blunt......

Personally, I've never had any kind of adverse reaction to MSG, I wouldn't actually notice if it is in my food. My uncle has asthma and he gets asthma attcks if he eats food with MSG in it. So I guess it's ok for most people... I still think that foods should have to be labeled to tell you that they contain MSG for the safety of people who can't have it.
