Have anyone ever heard of fibroid degeneration

My doctor seems to think I have this illness because I have suffered with fibroids for years. This doctor is not my regular doctor as my regular gyn retired. She said what is happening is the fibroids are no longer receiving the blood and they need blood to survive. They are shrinking. The pain is horrible. I don't experience it every day, but when it flares up its dreadful. The doctor told me to take tylenol and put a heat pad on the area. It helps, but I am wondering if this is normal. I did not want to go out and pay another doctor to hear the same story so if someone has experience this please let me know.
