A chemist might sell an unpleasant tasting liquid that it is a safe one that the thumb can be covered in. That might work otherwise a reward system might work. I am sure the child does it out of habit. Good luck to your friend.

I think my friend is more worried now a days because the child's mouth is coming up.even the doctor said it is better to get rid of that habit before he gets his new set of teeth.so that it wont affect his teeth in anyway in future.i know it is kind of a security thing.i told her that too.i was a thumb sucking child too.but my teeth were good.thanks for all the suggestions.u guys are great helpers.

My daughter had an issue with thumb-sucking. We were very concerned about her teeth being damaged and my dentist told us to paint her fingernails. You can use clear polish if the child in question is a boy. It is very unpleasant to taste. It only took about two weeks before there was no more thumb-sucking.

I had a cousin who sucked his thumb into 1st grade,His parents tried hot sauce on his thumb and they also have a product you can buy thats suppost to help with thumb sucking, not sure if it works, but I would suggest to let him stop on his own. Its usually a security things for kids its one thing no one can take from them and he will stop when its time,if he needs the need to suck his thumb to comfort him so be it,as long as the dentist says its not effecting his teth in any way it should be ok.

I can only respond with experience....I too was a thumb sucking child. I actually sucked my thumb until I was 12 years old. My thumb was the best thing I had..., and nobody could undertstand it. I'm not sure I even did. My mom tried everything to help me quit, but I think the more she tried, the more I clung to it. I had to decide on my own to quit. I finally did stop before I entered High School..thank God! I think that mother just has to try and ignore it, and let it go, and eventually he will stop on his own...in his due time, not his mothers.
