I live in West Bengal in India. Only this state has three different names in three different Indian languages. In English it is called "West Bengal", in our national language Hindi it is called "Paschim Bangal" and in my own and local language of this state Bengali it is called "West Bengal". There are several states in India. But no state has more than one name like my state West Bengal.

Yes agreed, No other state is being called with 3 names and only our Country is called with 3 names- India, Bharath and Hindustan. I live in Tamil Nadu where the tamizhans call it as Thamizhagam and other call it as TamilNadu. Kerala too has two names - Kerela and locals call it as Keralam. Apart from these states i think all the other states are just having one name. If any states have more than one name, please post your answere here.

I think West Bengal should be renamed as Bengal...after so many years of Partition and with Bangladesh becoming an independent nation, the term 'West' does not hold true any more. Most in today's generation cant relate with the term 'West Bengal' coz they have no idea of what 'East Bengal' was like. Also the differences between ghoti and bangal has mellowed down thru the years...and its all 'bangali' now. If we could change Calcutta to Kolkata, why cant we become Bengal again?

Yes Sujay, my state Orissa being the neighbourhood of your state, has more names than your state!! We officially call this 'Orissa' in Oriya and English languages. In Hindi, people call this state as 'Udisha'. In our national anthem, Orissa has been cited as 'Utkal' by Tagore. And in History, Orissa is referred as 'Kalinga' and it was here, Ashok the Great fought the battle of Kalinga... won the land but lost his heart...! Battle of Kalinga only changed Emperor Ashok to Dharmashok, the follower of non-violence, peace and welfare for the rest of his royal life in the ideology of Buddhism! So, Orissa, Udisha, Utkal and Kalinga are the four different names of my state Orissa in India. I think no other state has more names than this state in present India. Hope, you agree with my views. Thanks for this nice posting and have a nice day!!
