Do you think athletes deserve the millions of dollars they earn per year?

Athletes are sometimes epitomes of a country and they obviously deserve a big amount of money. Although some people may hold different opinions about the statement that they get paid more than they deserve according to their jobs. Why do they earn millions of dollars? What chararistics make them obtain the respect?
