What do people mean when they say the matrix has you?

It is kinda confusing because that would make no since and my friend says it all the time so i would like to know.

I think "the Matrix has you" means you're a victim of the social system and have no opinions of your own except the one's society tells you you're supposed to. I know many people, often people I respect, who I'm sorry to say the Matrix has.
