how to trace a lost laptop?

my laptop was robbed a year back,and i was helpless.All i was able to do is a police complaint,which was really useless.i have heard that one can trace lost laptops.is it really possible.how can u find a lost laptop? what are the things to be done as soon as u buy a laptop?

I know some laptop manufacturer keep a list of stolen laptops, ask the laptop's manufacturer whether they have such a list and whether the serial number of his laptop matches an entry in the database.
In theory you could also the police to track down the internet connection used in combination with the laptop, but in practice they won't do this.
Another option would be installing computer software which is so powerful that even when you a format a computer it still works.
