Changing words

Over the weekend our family went to a family party, we saw lots of lovely people there, some we knew, others we didn't and some who we hadn't seen for quite a long time.
While there it struck me how they way we talk has changed over the years....
Ie, when I was a girl if you went to talk to anyone at a party it was just classed as "going to talk to that person over there, or chat to that person".
A while back I think the in term was socializing, or doing the rounds.
Over the weekend people at the party were talking about going social networking around the people at the party.
My question is... what terms of speech to you know that have changed over the years?
Many thanks

I guess the way we talk or speak tends to change as we grow up, because of the enviroment and surroundings, type of ple we interact with.. Thus as time goes by, we learn to adapt a certain way of talking, unlike when we are all kids or young, because that's the time, we will only be mixing with kids of the same age or slightly older.. haha =D
BUt as one grows older, into the working world, everything changes, ple we meet in life everyday are different.. There will be a time for laugh with colleagues, but there will be a time for serious business too.. We have learned to tune ourself to suit whatever event we are in ^_^ As one gets older, they tend to stick to that particular way and wont be changing anymore ^_^

all those terms were in use when I was a girl, it just depended on who used them, socializing, making the rounds, going to talk to someone over their, now it is also working the room, and networking,

I have never heard of it called Social Networking when I have been in groups, but I guess I can see why people would think like that. Personally for me, when I think of Social Networking I think of being online in sites like here. But things have changed a lot since I was growing up for sure. Now the biggest thing people say when talking with others is Back In The Day, and personally now being in my mid 40s sometimes just thinking like that makes me see how so many things have changed and continue to change from there.

there are lots of words that have changed or perhaps vanished. The three letter word to describe alternate lifestyle is one of the most obvious, it used to mean happy. I used to go to the picture show. The theater meant a movie, rather than a stage show. All jeans were Levi's, and a lot of words that are used in everyday language today were considered vulgarities just a few years ago.

I've heard that term before but it was just called "Networking" I guess it used to be called word of mouth but since its better to present yourself rather than somebody talk you up I guess the term changed to meet the need. Hooking up is another one, I never used it but apparently it means more that attaching a car to a trailer.

I think a lot has changed since I was growing up, Anne18. Mainly, because I grew up in such a small town and in Eastern Kentucky. We weren't necessarily what you would call hicks, but everyone down there talks a lot different than anywhere else in the world. I even have to translate if I have to take any friends down there, from time to time. LOL Everything is spelled the same, just pronounced different. :)
My first job after moving to the city was working at a bank. So I concentrated really hard on speaking properly so that I could move up. I didn't get rid of my draw, even though it isn't nearly as strong as it was way back then.

I can think of one thing we used to say that we don't say anymore. My Mum used to ask her friends who they deal with, meaning company name or shop, ect. Now if someone asked you who you deal with now there would be shock waves and the police called.I am sure there must be hundreds but that is the only one I can think of.
