My kittens are now nearly six weeks old and i am trying to wean them off their mum.Their mum keeps getting meat and carrys it to them. The kittens are eating the ham,but still seem to want a lot of milk.Any ideas other than to stop the mum cat sometimes from putting herself with the kittens as often?

Hi jugs...I wouldn't worry about weaning the kittens because when it is time the mother will do it herself.
She will get where she will hide and only let one suckle at a time and will turn the others away. w\When it is time for them all to be done with her feeding them she will kick them off when they try to suckle. I would just let nature take it's course and everything will take care of itself.

The mum will wean them herself. She will begin to give them more meat and offer them less and less milk. It may take awhile for her to get them completely weaned, but she'll get it done. She really is probably just beginning the weaning progress. It's obvious she's already begun because she's bringing them the meat! Be patient, she's doing her job!!

Mommy kitties are pretty smart and know when it's time to wean her kittens. She is probably getting ready to wean them if she taking meat to them. You might tart giving them bread soaked in milk too. But let mommie take care of the actual weaning.

At six weeks, the kittensshould still be getting milk from their mother. They will begin to learn to eat solid food, but they still need the complete nutrition that they get from nursing from their mother. You shouldn't try to force weaning yet. Generally, kittens need to be at least 8 weeks old before they are separated from their mother.
