What do you think of NYU?

A few days ago, I wached the series Gossip Girl. When B's step father persuaed her to go to NYU, she showed a disdainful expression " Not just because I lost Yale dose not mean I will waste my time in a non-ivy, reading beloved six times and experimenting with lesbianism."
What does she mean by saying this? I didn't really get her meaning....
What do you think of NYU? Is it a "glorified state school"?

I also don't know what is wrong with NYU. I don't live in States, so I don't know what kind of reputation NYU got there. But as I know from reading articles or magazines, I thought NYU is one of the best university there. Many popular people or celebrity got into there. Maybe it's not as prestigous as Harvard, MIT or Yale but certainly has a credible reputation. Maybe US citizens know about this better. And also what about Brown? Is it also prestigious there?

Brown is one of the IVY league, so I think it is prestigious in States. NYU is also prestigious in my mind, but I just wonder why does Blair say that abou it. Maybe there's some other impression about it in US citizens.

but what differs a uni to be classified as an ivy league or not? I still confuse about this.
