Hello mylotters, I want to do a bit research how much the living cost in your country includes basic accomodation, eating 3x a day, transportation costs and leisuring cost. Please state all costs in US $. This is very useful to me since I like to travel and want to know how much I shoud prepared if in case I want to go to your city. If any of you want to go to Jakarta, here is the breakdown of the costs:
Accomodation : Living in an apartment/rented room in a house - $120-$210/month (already air conditioned). It maybe significantly higher if you live in lavish apartment. If not -AC, you can get for $80 in middle of the city. For hotels around 40$ in 3 star hotel/night
Food : Living in Jakarta is quite cheap, especially its food. You can eat for 50 cents and already full, but cleanliness is not guaranteed:) If you order McD or Burger King is around $3 per meal.Eating in a cafe/restaurant around $5-10 or more
Transportation costs : Transportation is the main problem here. Many non-air conditioned bus, pollution level is high, which maybe reflects the bus here regularly charge you only $20 cents. If you go by busway, a mass rapid bus here, it cost you $.35 one way. If you go by taxi, depends on kms, but usually $.50 opening fare and will add up $.025 per 100 metres.
So, if you are backpackers and only stay like 3 days here, bringing I think bringing $200 is more than enough, especially because there are a lot of cheap hotels for backpackers, which costs you much lower than above price. But you should try the nightlife though. Although Indonesia is a Muslim majority populated country, it has the best clubs in Southeast Asia. So you might be prepared around $50 if you want to go clubbing, regular drink is $7-$10, opening bottle cost u around $100-$200.
Please share your living costs here, could be in details or in brief breakdown if you want.

I live in the South West part of England. My house is on the edge of a coastal town overlooking the countryside. The money we use is the pound and US$ can be exchanged for it. It costs about $1000 a month to rent a house here. A hostel would cost around $25 a night. Transport costs $5 for a short journey return and around $20 for a longer journey return for the day. Costs are more if staying away a few days. It is best to book long distance train tickets in advance as the system of fares is complicated. The same journey could cost $30 or $150 depending on when booked. Food prices are expensive and the average shopping bill would be around $40. A soft drink in a shop would cost around $1 to $2. Per day a budget traveler would neded about $60 a day and a mid range one about $100 a day.

I went to London last year for training for about a month and it's all freakin expensive! Luckily I got allowance 35 pounds per day, a service apartment around Pimlico near Chelsea, and breakfast + lunch in meeting area. I buy monthly ticket for bus and tube, and it cost a lot, imagine 90 pounds or roughly $180 for just transportation! Plus people there alwayd go to the bar after office hours, actually I reluctant to go there all the time with my colleague but since it is the time to socialize so I went there twice a week. I cannot imagine live in London, although it is a nice city, but it is way too expensive for me. Where do you live specifically maximax? You're not in London, are you? Thanks for sharing

I live twenty miles south of Bristol in North Somerset. It is in the South West of England. Before living here I lived just three miles from Canterbury in Kent. I worked in London for a couple of years. It is a very expensive city. My fares to work were really pricey. I am a local person with a good knowledge of how to travel cheaply. Accommodation is the price I consider first. It was lovely to hear about how you enjoyed living in London.

I went to Sumatra and found prices really cheap when I was on my trip around the world. Most of Europe is pricey, especially the capital cities like London, Paris, Vienna and Rome. Cities in Asia seem to be better value like Hong Kong and Singapore.
