English language and your own dialect......

I envy those members here that are so fluent or can speak and write well on their English language. Though speaking of English tongue has a big difference than writing. You can't correct your conversation as easy as just writing. You could have so much time thinking of what would you like to write than have an actual conversation using English language. Indeed this would not be a problem if you both could speak fluently and write correctly. I guess this is my problem since I am not use of talking in English language than speaking our own dialect. One thing that I owed in joining here in mylot is that I am striving hard to improve my English language just to let my posted topic be understood internationally by all members here. How about you, are you like me? A trying hard fellow just to be understood? Can you share your opinion..? Thanks

English is my mother tongue but I understand what you are trying to say. I knew a girl at university that was from Lancashire. She had a strong dialect and she got 'was and 'were' mixed up all the time. The English lecturer didn't like the way she spoke. She ended up getting a First Class Honors degree. When I was a child I had difficulty understanding what a Scottish lady from Glasgow was saying. I notice that My Lot members come from many different countries. I can think of some members that joined around the same time as me. Their writing in English has improved considerably. Some members are trying so very hard to be understood and I admire their effort. I am learning Spanish and it is not always easy. I find the words for 'left' and 'right' challenging to remember.

Hey, I'm from Lancashire Lancastrian is (or was) practically a language in it's own right. But the influence of the TV over the last 40 or 50 years has done a lot to even out regional accents and the proper Lancastrian is not as common as it used to be a few decades ago.

I am glad that you got my point. Many thanks for the best response. It is lovely to hear from you because you are from Lancashire. I wouldn't want to offend any of you from there.

back in highschool, i really enjoyed reading a lot of english books and watching english television shows. i think that helped me a lot in my english. but the first time i have ever made a conversation with a person of different nationality was already during my university days. i think my written english was okay even back then, grammar and all. but my verbal english needed a lot of improvement... especially coming from a town with a strong local accent. i could not say that i struggled, but i really did try to study english both written and oral. i was really nervous when i first trained to become a trainer... coz that involves a lot of speaking in the english language. but those can be learned, just needs practice and more interaction. mylot can be that one place to practice english and interact with international members. since the medium used is english, we can't do much except to write and discuss in english. now that helps a lot in practicing the language. your english is quite good. keep it up!

i never dreamed that i would be a speaker in an international conference. it was quite different from having a local crowd when i'm doing a local training. that's when i appreciate the fact that i patiently practiced my english to improve both written and oral skills. because during international travels, i meet a lot of people and being fluent in english helps. and yes, i think the effort paid off.

Hi, mobhomeir. First, I wanna say you expressed yourself quitely clearly. That means you've already had a good command of English. So don't bother yourslef by thinking you're not good at writing English. As to spoken English, I suggest you practising more. There is a proverb in my country saying "practice makes perfect". I'm sure you'll get it. So just keeping going! English is not my mother tongue but I've been learning it since middle school and now I'm an English teacher. I really liked learning English at the very beginning. I've read a lot of original English novels and spoke English almost every day. There are members from different countries here. We're all here to sharpen English writing skills as well as earn some bucks. As long as we keep trying, we'll make great progress. Good luck and happy mylotting!

English is not my mother tongue but I can speak and write English well but not fluently. I think English language is the easy language to learn rather than the other language. I can speak some other language as well aside from my own dialect which I'd Tagalog (Filipino). I also think that your English is well written. I an definitely understand what you had just written and your grammar is excellent as well.

Although we speak different languages, and English is our only way of understanding each other. Yeah, i know its hard to speak English even though your a master of writing it, because i think it depends on the one you are talking with. Every persons way of talking differs in their style, tune and way of speaking it. But that is how it is, as long as you get to present the correct meaning and idea to the one you are talking with, then there's no problem at all. I think you have no problem at all in English writing, i understand it perfectly. So there's no need to worry..^_^

Yes but sometimes it would be frustrating to myself. I've been trying hard to have a good verbal conversation with someone but my tongue twisted. I have a good idea to share it but sometimes you can't express well to whom you're talking about..... No problem with writing because you can edit it if you see it incorrectly written..Anyway, thanks for sharing with your opinion...

It seems to me that English is one language that is spoken by most people quite easily and I do enjoy learning other languages but they are not as used as English in conversation. Cheers!!

I would say that i can not speak English fluently as in in correct pronunciation and tone. Sometimes i can write English grammatically correct sometimes not. English is also part of our National language next to Tagalog. I don't try to talk in English even just talking with my sister or brothers who sometimes talk in English. I prefer to write according to you that you have time to think and edit what you are going to say. The disadvantages of written English is that you have to spell it correctly, unlike oral English that as long as someone can understand your word it is just okay.

hello there mobhomeir... i like my own language here in the Philippines. the English language is the universal language(well that is what i have heard) that i why in school we were taught the English language. and maybe because we were colonize by Americans before that is why we were taught the English language. i think you should love first your own language before you like other language. It is one way of telling or showing the world that you love your country. have a nice day...

English is my first language, but I can understand the struggle in trying to learn a foreign language. Even though I love learning Japanese and have been taking classes for three years, it can be pretty difficult. It is very time-consuming, as it requires a lot of memorization, just like any language. I like that people can practice the language they're trying to learn online, on sites such as myLot. I should probably do that more on Japanese websites, though I sometimes think I'm going to use incorrect sentence structure and seem silly, ha ha. Any practice is good practice though.

Hello baldypriest...I think you're right. Constant practice makes us perfect. I mean not necessarily perfect but at least nearest to perfect...Keep it up man!!!
