My Grandson's Baseball Game

Last evening my wife and I drove a total of 80 miles to see our grandson play baseball. When we arrived at the ball diamond the only team there was my grandson's. They were practicing and waiting for the oponents to arrive. After about 30 minutes and the other team didn't show up, the game was called and our team won by forfeit.
I spent 20 years coaching and managing Khoury league baseball teams and never once did we forfeit a game. It seems that it isn't important to some parents that their child show up when the temperature rises (it was 95 degrees yesterday) but what is this teaching the child?
There were a lot of games rained out this Spring and they have to be made up. My grandson was to play last night, he has a game Friday, a double header (2 games) on Saturday and a game on Sunday. Next week his team starts tournament play. They are scheduled in 3 different tournaments. He loves baseball and is a pretty good player, so he'll show up. I find that a lot of young children play on teams and the only reason they are there is to please their parents. Most of them have NO baseball skills and don't want to be there. The team managers have to play them regardless.
Are your children active in sports of some kind? The exercise is good for them and it keeps them from spending all of their time being hooked on computer games and lurching on websites where they shouldn't be.

I am so sorry that you did not get to watch after driving that far. It is sad that the other team did not even show up. My son played for 2 years, but doesn't play anymore. He only had one team forfeit a game but they still played as they were short players and some of my son's team played with the other team, just so they could play.

Yes, that's one way that they can at least play a game. We stayed and watched the boys practice, then they chose up sides and played a mini-game. They had fun though and got a chance to roll in the dirt and slide into the bases, I'm sure it made their mothers happy??? They just don't think they have played unless they come home with a dirty uniform. Almost sixty years ago I started managing ball teams and that part of it hasn't changed a bit.
By the way, our grandson's team is totally integrated with blacks and whites and they have become great friends over the last 4 years... we need more of that.
