One of the things that bugs me is when a person that has spoken english their whole lives, just butchers it,,,,and some of these people also have other characteristics that make them sound like hicks, one person in particular says things like "they was scared" or " them people" or "he never spend as much as him"..these aren't typos obviously, just wrong ways of grammar and the english language,,,,so have you ever met someone who has such bad grammar and english is their first languafe?

Yes, it annoys me too and you are a prime example; English should be capitalised and multiple commas are incorrect punctuation. 'These' after a full stop requires capitalisation and your final ‘language’ is incorrectly spelt. Physician, heal thyself, as the saying goes. All the best urban

You seriously do not get the point. If you are going to compare a typo, using extra commas in a forum, and not capitalizing a word with someone saying "they was scared", or "them people", then you really are just trying to take a jab at me, or be anal. If someone makes some little mistake, i don't think of them as wrong or think any less of them, I just realize it happens. When someone says on mylot " I is happy" or anything along those lines, when English is their first language, then I have to cringe and realize that this issue is not a nit picky one. I realize I should have explained my topic sentence better as to why I chose "hick" and "redneck". There is a difference between making typos and adding extra commas, but blatantly saying "I is doing this", and at the same time trying to sound intelligent is something very scary.

On the contrary, the issue is similar; when I see a person make such rudimentary errors as not observing capitalisation or adding additional commas I also cringe and tend to regard the person in what is, perhaps, a similar manner to which you regard 'hicks' and 'rednecks.' All the best urban

Have you ever actually lived in the U.S? I looked at your profile and you are in the U.K., so I am wondering, unless you spent some time living here, how you know what I mean by redneck or hick? How do you know what a hick really means? I wouldn't know the slightest think about U.K culture because I have never lived there, so I'm wondering that if you haven't lived here, then how can you make any comparisons to aspects of our culture and people?

I tend to take offense to you calling "these people" hicks or rednecks. My family lives in a small town in the middle of nowhere, we would be considered rednecks by most people, however I do not "speak" like that. Different parts of this country have different ways of saying things. Yes I have met several people with bad grammer and english being their 1st language. I can also see that a lot of people don't know how to spell or punctuate, however it is not my job to correct everyone.

like i posted below, i suppose I should have explained myself better. If you encounter someone here on mylot who frequently says "They was" or "them be", while they are trying to say something serious, would you take them seriously? I didn't mean to say that all people with bad grammar are rednecks, i meant that people on mylot who are first language English speakers and say "they was" at least once in every post, do sound like hicks.

Most of the English problems I have encountered here on Mylot are by people whose first language is not English, and those I can forgive. However, there are a couple of other sites I'm on, forums something like this, where the red-neck language is unbelieveable!!!! It makes me wonder what Americans are talking about when they say that ENGLISH needs to be the language of the USA. LOL
