Are you a menu - savvy wait staff in a restaurant?

How many of you ever work at a restaurant? It doesn't matter what cultural cuisine the restaurant is. I work at a Thai restaurant once, and I was a wait staff there. When the customers had questions regarding the dishes they aren't familiar with, they would normally ask before place their orders. So, are you familiar with every dish on the menu? Do you know the very detail of the ingredients, and can you give a best description on the dishes, so the customer know what they are ordering? I guess that is too much of requirement. Honestly, I only knew a little of each dish, and the rest, I make it up on my own. I just knew the name, and pray that customers won't ask too much questions. Are you a menu - savvy wait staff?
