So far my favorite horror book is "IT" by Stephen King. It is a thick book, and it does have some slow parts in the story but for some unknown reason that one has stayed with me for over 20 years. I can be confussing at times but everything does fall into place. Because it is an old book you probably find it at the library, garage sale, used book stores or really cheap used copy on Amazon. I make it a point to read 1 hour every night before I go to bed. I just finished two, one by Maureen McCormick it was about growing up as Marcia Brady. It was really very good, she in life is nothing at all like the charactor Marcia. The second was Story Telling by Tori Spelling. Very good, interesting, funny, and you really get a feel for who and what she really wants to be. Tori is really very independant and reliant on her famous daddy's name. If your looking for good mysteries usually anything by Mary Higgins Clark is good. Just when you think you've figured it out, an unexpected twist comes. What ghost books do you have? I love true ghost stories. Haven't found a good one yet.

Oops, I meant to say that Tori is not reliant on her daddy's name. She really wants to be and live and normal non-hollywood life. I wish her luck.

Horror is a very broad genre, so it's hard to suggest anything without knowing more about you and your tastes. Some people enjoy "splatter fiction," while others prefer something more suspenseful, with "off-stage" deaths. Some people like reading about the Supernatural, while others prefer something psychological. Still, this is a pretty good collection of several of the "major" horror works to get you started. Once you find a style/sub-genre you really dig, you'll have a better idea as to how to find authors and works in it. The Haunting of Hill House - Shirley Jackson The Shining, It, Skeleton Crew - Stephen King Weaveworld, Cabal - Clive Barker The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde - R.L. Stephenson I am Legend - Matheson Psycho - Robert Bloch

I have to say that you have a decent list here but I must throw out a warning. Do not go into the Haunting of Hill House expecting it to be anything like the movie The Haunting with Liam Neeson, Catherine Zeta Jones and Lili Taylor, which is loosely based on the book. I really enjoyed the movie and as a result hated the book because the movie doesn't follow the book, really at all. Which made me very sad because I enjoyed other works I have read by Shirley Jackson.

The book "Gideon" by Russel Andrews is a great book. It is sitting on the edge of your seat, oh my gosh it is going to get him...kinda good. It is a thriller and well worth the read.

As has been mentioned before, It kind of depends on what kind of horror you are in to but here are my picks... Carrie and Firestarter by Stephen King The Turn of the Screw by Henry James The first four books by Amelia Atwater-Rhodes. They are listed on Amazon as Den of Shadows. They are, in order, The Forests of the Night, Demon in My View, Shattered Mirror, and Midnight Predator. They are YA/juvenile fiction but I thought they were really great books, well written, especially considering Amelia was 14 when she published the first one. And if you can find a collection of short stories...or collections, check out The Lottery by Shirley Jackson, The Yellow Wallpaper by Charlotte Perkins Gilliam and the Legend of Sleepy Hollow by Washington Irving Also, pretty much any story by Edgar Allen Poe but my favorite is The Cask of Amontillado .
