What's a reasonable emergency fund?

I know something is better than nothing, but what is a reasonable goal for an emergency fund? One month? Three months? I've even heard nine months, but that is WAY too overwhelming for me right now... I want a responsible but attainable figure/percentage! Also, we don't have a lot of extra cash, so any tips for setting aside? I know all the basics - like cutting phone services, planning menus, canceling cable, etc. But if anyone has any particularly novel idea, I'd love to hear it!
