from our country people believe that you have to have a college degree to be able to get a good job and earn a good living. on the other hand on the book rich dad poor dad, the author referred to his biological father as the poor dad who tries to instill the same notion to him. while his rich dad, father of his friend, did not graduate from college and yet earned good money by managing his own business. im just curious, do you believe that people have more edge when they have a college degree?

Yes,I do believe people with a college degree have an extra edge over those who do not.I don't know about other countries but in India the employment conditions are so bad that even people having engineering degrees are jobless. Here you cannot think of dropping out of college if you want a decent job. It's true that you can set up your own business without having high educational qualifications but there too,you have to work very hard and you require a solid backing in the form of capital and contacts.I have now passed out college and enrolled for a postgraduate degree in the university. But let me tell you even after completion of this degree I cannot be too sure of a job.Employment conditions are really pitiful in India.

Thanks a lot for wishing me well :) In India, along with the degree, the marks you secure also matters a lot because you may find that your friend has got through a job on the basis of higher marks even though both of you have the same qualifications! That's why there is fierce competition among students here, you can see that right from one's school-days.I'm trying to get good results for this very reason.Hoping for the best. :)

I don't think that having a diploma equates with having a good job and a good life in the future. Some of the people I know who are successful in their careers are only high school graduates and started to work already when they're still 16-18 years old. Although I agree that education is important because it gives you the edge compared to those who haven't been able to finish studying, hard work and perseverance is another attribute that a person must have to earn more or to be successful. We should also put God first in every works that we do so that it will be blessed and never forget to give our tithes so that our source of income will be blessed also.

All college can tell a potential employer is that you completed the course. College might be necessary in order to get some jobs, but it has little to do with whether or not you keep the job. I personally wonder if it would be better to go into an apprenticeship programs rather than to college. That way you could concentrate on your particular interest and not get bogged down with things you don't need. But whether you go to college or not, I don't think that has anything to do with your success. Working smart, having a better idea and the drive to accomplish your goals, and believing in yourself is what's going to make you successful.

i like your idea, if i had my way, i would certainly do it that way - signing up for an apprenticeship program to give me more exposure and experience on the fields im particularly interested in.

I think that use to be the case but not any more. We now live in a world where entrepreneurship and small business ownership is very much supported and encouraged. Most of the time you don't need a degree to make it happen, although education is always a good thing. There are still many people who prefer the corporate life with the guaranteed salary and benefits and if you are one of them then by all means get your degree because those with degrees have a much better chance of landing the job than those without. However, if you feel the inclination and drive to start your own business and be your own boss, a degree won't hurt you but you can do it without one.

You do not need a diploma to earn more. It all depends on the person. If he works hard and smart about his money, he will definitely earn more. It does not matter whether he has a degree or not. However, there are more opportunities for those who earned a degree.

I agree with sikat101. people with no diploma will also have the chance to earn big and earn more out there. but no doubts, who ever has the diploma or degree, he or she will have more offers.

In todays world I think it is the knowledge which pays you if you want to go to top position. We came across many people who don't have college education but they are at the top position, so I think if you have college pass out it is nice. So, one can get edge over others.

i think all your responses are very true. while a college education certainly gives you an edge at the end of the day its still one's abilities that will make them successful.

I think it depends upon the individual as to if graduating from college is more beneficial than not. A formal educatiion does not guarantee success.

Earning a degree is an advantage most especially if you want to land that most sought after job.. but hey, it's not applicable to all people.. why? not all people who graduated from college have good paying jobs.. in fact, most of them don't have careers right now due to global financial crisis and recession.. what it takes for one person to be successful is his/her ability to survive the everyday life..

No,false my brother don't pass his high school exam, and I a university graduates, yet he earn more than me. I read the book. Actually, during this time, I think what working is hard work and ready to learn, because it based on market demands. I'm working in totally unrelated to the things that I learned during university.

In our country , a college degree is not a requirement for one to get a job. However, having one will give a person more opportunities compared to someone who did not have a degree.

In today's globally competitive world, I think you have to have a bachelor's degree in order to face the world. We have to admit, that even people who are eligibles, those who passed government examinations, cannot even land a good job, how much more if you did not even reach college? Although, in this challenging times, technical courses are much preferred. Why? Because, they have a low paying job. That is why a couple of company's nowadays hire people who have just finished 2 years in college, because they can save paying salary and other benefits to them.

Hi!could it be that you're from the Philippines too? Then you're not new to reading and hearing that one of the major requirements in order to land a job here is indeed a diploma!i do believe that finishing college gives you an edge although it should not be a benchmark of how good a person is at work. I have a friend who didnt finish college but he's way better that most of the graduates i know. He's well versed in english and his solid background in running his dad's company makes him more competitive, but he's an undergrad. Sad thing is most of the companies here require you to present all those school papers first before they hire you. I wish they could somehow reverse the process. Hire you first, test your skills and if they're satisfied they could take you in with or without diploma as long as you're with a good moral. I have to say that education is truly essential, it helps in preparing you mentally, physically, spiritually etc. But eventually, the universe out there will be your real teacher and it throws different experiences at you which serves as your lessons later on.

When the economy is at a normal state-I believe the answer to be true, employers are willing to compensate employees that have college degrees. There business is stable and they can financially do this. But when the economy is in a recession as it is now-I believe the answer to be false, employers are downsizing and the same amount of work still needs to be done. Employers are looking to pay employees less. I am seeing people with experience is outranking people that just have college degrees and no experience.

it really depends. Yes its indeed true that if you are a college student earn more money because their are greater opportunities. But if the person is really hard working, theres nothing to worry about actually.
