Why does William shortens to Bill?

I have known few people who were named as William but they are often called "Bill". This discussion came upt to my mind after knowing that Bill had died as well. Back in our country, some would also use there nicks as Boy while their real full name is really far from Boy. But how did this happen? Can someone tell me please?
