How long are the summer school holidays in your country?

Here in Greece the schools break up in June for 13 weeks as it becomes too hot for the children to attend school. Does your country have such long school breaks and do you find that the children are really ready to go back to school after their holiday as the break is just too long? It would be interesting to compare.

Generally in the US, schools close for the year in June and re-open in September, although there are some minor differences depending on where you live. Here, the kids just got out of school last week and will be out of school for the next two months. Summer vacation is the high point of a kid's life. I remember summers as seemingly endless days of sunshine, friends, adventures and fun. I remember tumbling out of bed, rushing out in the morning to find my friends and barely returning before dinner. A trip to the beach was always fun but there was something magical even about having whole days with no schedule, being totally carefree. I think the time off is good for kids. It's a time that they can be kids, without time restrictions. They learn social structure and how to negotiate when they are with groups of friends and deciding what to do all day. They get exercise, fresh air and sunshine and they don't have to worry about getting dirty. I think that a child with no summer break is more likely to get frustrated and fed up with school. Hey, we all need some down time for our brains.

Sounds like the kids there get the same kind of fun break as the ones over here. I know what you mean about not missing the schedule, some days school days can be so long then followed by football pemractice a few times a week which on those days gives them no down time before bed.

Here in the Philippines, the summer break is 2 months. It is from April to 1st week of June. It's very hot at that time. As for my experience, when the school days are near I find my summer break too short and wished it could have been longer. I am just too lazy to go to school.:) Others here finds the break too long and wants to go to school as soon as possible. That is because they want to have allowance(money) as for their parents don't give them when there are no classes.:)

Hello unwanted. I've never heard before of school children wanting to go to school for an allowance. Here the children are given more money in the holidays so they can enjoy more things in their free time, in term time there is little free time as the days are long especially when the school day is followed by football practice. The children here count the days down to the holidays but near the end they are really wanting to go back to school as the holiday is just too long.

here in China we have about two months summer holiday. but nowadays the children cannot enjoy summer holiday as we used to do. they have to attend various kinds of make-up classes so that they can do well in their study. though sometimes they do not want to do it, their parents make them do it so that the children can be enrolled by key universities.

Hi, I suppose the make-up classes are like extra tuition. Here everything stops for the children for the summer as too hot and even sports have to wait till September to resume.

zeusonfire, 2 months sounds pretty good though it seems pretty odd to restart in July, is it not the hottest time there? Do you have far to travel far to go back to college and is it hard to leave your home?

13 weeks is a pretty long time... Schools in India don't give long vacations as it is in Greece.. The vacations continued normally for 1 month and not more than that.It may be shorter in some parts.. And the kids also get burdened by loads of Holiday home works. It is a tricky situation.

I agree that 13 weeks is far too long, especially for the past hour!!! Getting ready now to take my son out now it is cooling down. They have masses of homework here during term times but none at all for this holiday. Sounds like the children in India are kept pretty busy with school work in the hols.

I can sympathise with not wanting to wake up early after the holidays. My son is contrary, he wakes up extra early in the holidays and stays up much later too but as soon as school rolls round back in September he will have trouble getting up at 7 am again and it gets worse as winter progresses and the mornings get darker.

Our summer holiday is only 8 weeks. My children tend a school that has a kinda year round schedule. We have classes that are 96 mins long. So school is kinda long here. My children never want summer vacation.

Wow, they don't actually want the summer vacation!! Out here the children do look forward to it as they can stay up late, play on the beach and swim, and hang around in the house when it is too hot to go outside during the day. 8 weeks is still long compared to the 6 in the UK.
