Can I defrost fish and then refreeze it?

Last night a local fisherman gave me two big bags of fish from his latest catch, he had popped them into the freezer until he saw me and I put them into the freezer when I got home. My question is as they are all frozen together and too many to use at once is it ok to defrost them, separate them, and then refreeze the fish I can't use that day, without cooking it of course?

I don't think that is a good idea. I have heard that the fish frozen are done pretty quickly so as to cause less damages to the cells. When you defrost them and freeze them again, it cannot happen quickly enough to achieve the same effect and thus will due quite some damages making the fish less tasty as it could have been. Though, I only hear other people saying and haven't got a proof for this.

Thanks Faisai, I will bear that in mind and also wait to see if there are more responses. Sounds like it might have to be cooked fish alongside a fish soup made with the extra fish. Now I wonder if I can freeze the fish soup from the same scenario.
