I think that you are probably referring to the upgrade offered on new machines, which also applied when Windows vista came out. If Windows 7 is set to be released on a particular date then people will not buy a new computer during the preceding months, instead they will wait until Windows 7 appears. To counteract this scenario it is normal to offer a free upgrade to anyone buying a new computer during such a period.

It looks like they may be, if you qualify: http://www.microsoft.com/windows/buy/offers/upgrade.aspx I read that as meaning some new machines will be entitled to a free upgrade, plus possibly some of the older ones.

hello shrey, Last yr. of September one of my friend told me that free upgrade to windows 7. YES it is true that they given a free upgrade because my friend is using windows 7 and it is really great not like VISTA (hangers). He told me to download also my PC but i didn't accept that because my PC is not satisfied to their requirements and i didn't sure it is only for 1-2 months to use the windows 7. I think the purpose on that is too survey the people if they like the windows 7 before they market.
