Are you a night washer?

As I recently discovered that my electric company cuts their prices after 9pm, I have started to put my washing machine on at night time. It works out really well because what with the good weather we have been experiencing lately it means that I can put the clothes out on the line before the kids go to school. It is then dry before they are home from school and they can play outside with their water pistols if they like and I am not bothered by the neighbours having their barbeques in the evening as the smoke always seems to blow in our direction, hmmm funny that.
Anyway, do you ever put your washing machine on at night time?

Nah, I still do my laundry during the day. I don't think I get any discounts by doing my laundry at night anyway. And I like to remove my clothes from the dryer right away and hang them up so that they stay wrinkle free. Plus, I live in a complex, so even if I wanted to do my laundry at night, I wouldn't because I wouldn't want to bother my neighbors with the noise of my washer and dryer.

Now, I didn't say that I run my dryer at night. I don't let it run at night because it makes too much noise and I like to remove my clothes right away. I run it during the day so that I can get my clothes out right away and so it doesn't disturb my neighbors.

What a great way to encourage people to reduce using/wasting energy during peak hours! Very good indeed. Now where are you from? Because I don't really know if southern california edison have the same policy. But from now on, I will start doing laundry after 9:00 PM, see where that takes me. A penny saved is a penny earned - here in mylot, and out there in the real world.
Thank you for sharing! Any other energy saving tips? =D

Hi ya khayshenz
I am in the UK and not all electricty provides offer this so it might not be worth you effort to wash at night time. It is an added bonus that I can get the washing out on the line early though. Check out the discussions under frugal living and you might be able to find some other tips as I can't think of any off the top of my head. I always turn bottles of stuff upside down like ketchup and shampoo so it all runs to the top and is easier to get the last bit!

Electricity here in the Philippines is expensive there are some added taxes in the bill that the electricity provider can't explain what are the added taxes for. We prefer to wash our clothes by day and to save electricity we washed it by hand. We get used to it even sometimes I complained to my mom that I needs help so I can finish earlier. Sometimes she helps me or my sister assigned to wash our clothes by weekend. I hope the rate of the electricity here would go down.

That would be cool if our electric company did that also cause I would definitely be washing nights. But usually we wash clothes between 9 in the morning till 5-6 in the evening. How did you find that they charge less after 9? Did you get a paper or find it online somewhere?

I personally like washing by hand but since hubby prefers machine I have started using it this year
he told me to do dishwashing at night but somehow I feel like washing it around 8 or after dinner just in case something happens and it stops working I want to be there and fix it right away or wash them by hand at least

sorry was thinking of dishwasher when I read your thread
for laundry we do it in the weekend
with the weather so good we can dry them outside
in winter it's hard with utility bills high but we can't dry outside
so we have to put up with it

Hi ya LittleMel
Yes I did read your response and realised you were talking about the dishwasher lol
During the winter I try to time it so that the washing is finished just before I turn on the heating so that I can dry the clothes over the radiators!

Hi Humbug, my electric is cheaper after 11pm at night, but my son likes doing the washing and does it anytime of the day which annoys me even though I tell him not to do it til 11pm at night...so our electric is still not really any cheaper. But I do stay up late and also have a snake which means I have to keep her vivarium (cage) hot all night and day so it does work in one way...hugs LoLo

That makes a lot of sense Humbug, but my son wouldn't have it plus a timer doesn't work where I live..am not sure why but it doesn't.

Hi ya littleowl
I sometimes set my washing machine on the timer so that I don't forget. Maybe you could get your son to put the washing machine on the timer if you have one then he would feel like he's done the washing by putting it on!! Does that make sense? LOL

My mom does it exactly the same way. It's way much cheaper to wash at night. But not even the washing machine, the dryer too and the dishwasher... You'd be surprised how much you can cut from your water and electricity bill. Because electricity companies do it too.

good thing for you that in your place, your electric company has this beautiful discount given to you after 9pm. our electric here has an increase so as much as i can, i hardly use washing mcahing. i do hand washing just to minimize electic consumption.

I should start washing more at night. It seems like it would be better all the way around. The sun is no longer out so it would probably take less to dry your clothes also and then cool off your house using your AC. I'm trying to think more of how it would be cheaper to do alot of things that before I would just do when I wanted to do or the way I wanted to do it. Things change when not as much money is coming into the house. You look for every way you can to cut down the cost of things.

Hi there mflower2053
I certainly find it much easier putting my machine on at night time and I really don't think it disturbs my neighbours as they haven't knocked on my door to complain yet and they sure wouldn't hesitate to do so if it did disturb them!!

I don't put on my washing machine or my dryer at night because I live in a basement suie in the house and it would disturbed the people upstairs, as it is loud for some reason. my machines are brand new, it's not the machines, it's the house isn't well insulated for sound.
I found this out when the man upstairs moved out and a couple moved in. They started taking showers at 3 in the morning and doing laundry at all hours of the night and it woke us up downstairs. So I had to ask them not to use their machines at night and that I would do the same. So we now have this rule, sort of, that after 11pm no laundry or showers if it can be helped.
I live in Canada and never ever heard about an energy company lowering their rates at certain times of the day, or night. This is something new to me.

Hey there chrislotz
I am glad that you were able to come to some sort of arrangement with your neighbour as that really could have caused some serious problems between you. I guess companies around the world have a different service they offer to their customers.
Thanks for your response and sorry for the delay in commenting on it

I live in an apartment and each floor has it's own laundry room, so, management pays for it, but, it's a good thing to keep in mind for the future if I ever do have my own washing machine. Every little bit helps!

Wow... i know this sounds kind of dumb but where do you find out if your local company gives different rates after certain times would it be on the bill or is it not so obvious..

It seems that the policy of the electric company do you good. Mmm, I do not wash late in night unless I am too excited to sleep.

I have no idea whether our company charge less after 9pm. This isn't Economy 7 is it? We have stopped washing on any setting except cold now, unless there's a really stubborn stain. But we do wash at all times of the day and night. How much does and average wash cost at 40 degrees Humbug?

Hey p1kef1sh
No I am with EDF and they drop there price per unit after 9pm. I used to wash at 30 degrees but found it just wasn't getting the clothes clean not even with those new wash at less than 30 degrees washing gels and stuff, have tried them all by now and they are not cheap!! To be honest I have no clue how much an average wash at 40 degrees costs p1kef1sh you will have to investigate that.
Cheers p1key

Unless I happen to hear on the news that it's one of those days where we are being asked to use less electricity, I don't even pay attention to that. I do my laundry during the day on either Saturday or Sunday. If I'm out of town for the weekend and something can't wait until the next weekend, then I will do some laundry on a weeknight!

Thanks for the tip, i usually wash in the daytime or just when i get a load of clothes. I have been trying to run my dishwasher at odd times because somebody told me that would save if u didn't run it right after supper when everybody else was running their's.

Are elecricity is so high that if they offered discount at 3 am I would wake up and do the washing. That is such a good scheme. After washing in COLD water cycle and on a short wash we hang the clothes on the line. We always do a short wash and our clothes are not really dirty but we change frequently in the hot weather. For personal clothes then we may put them in the dryer for 5 mins with a fabric softener sheet - really just to take the wrinkles out of them so we do not have to iron. Are you remembering to unplug all appliances when not in use? That really helps.Blessings

Here at my place, the electricity company charges the same rate for 24 hours. So, whenever the clothes are piled up I start using the washing machine.
