I just read on SoapCentral that Stuart Damon, who played Alan Quartermaine for 30+ years and was unceremoniously written off GH, will be joining As The World Turns by the end of the summer. I had been under the impression that Stuart had wanted to leave GH and retire. He should air late August or early September. I wish he had stayed on GH, I miss his wit and presence. He will always be Alan to me. What do you think of this news?

Man, I wish they'd quit tinkering around with the cast members who've been there so long. It just won't be the same without him, and I can't picture them sticking in somebody else as Alan. You know, the more they try and cater to the younger viewing crowd, the more they lose their old faithful viewers who have watched for all those years and like the continuity of the cast.

I used to watch GH a lot, but I really can't say I've gotten into the story line of late. Huh, so they had his character die, I thought they just dismissed him like they've done to others (and on other soaps too.) Thanks...I didn't know that. I'll have to tune in and check it out.

I heard they were no renewing contracts of the highest paid actors... being on the show that many years.. he was one of them. He didn't want to quit.. he just wasn't renewed. I Loved Alan!!! Handsome and everything.. I think he was more handsome in his older years than he was when he first started on the show!!! But boy was he a hotty!!! I wished they hadn't cancelled him. I do miss him.. the Q's just aren't the same! But I won't start watching another soap just to see him.. well, might tune in to see if he is still cute, but other than that...I couldn't watch it anyway - he is Alan, no one else!

I agree. That would be like Susan Lucci playing someone other than Erica Kane or Leslie Charleson playing another character than Monica. That is the risk actors play in portraying the same character for a prolonged period of time. Not just on soaps either. Don Knotts certainly epitomized Barney Fife for his whole post Andy Giffith career. It was tough at first to see "Carly"(Sarah Brown) playing someone else. Now she has made Claudia her part, but I wasn't so sure at first.

I am always happy to hear about an older soap opera actor/actress getting a job. I don't know why so many writers think the younger generation doesn't want to see mature characters on their soaps. Two of my favorite characters on General Hospital are Edward and Monica. Now I never liked Alan, but that didn't mean he wasn't great on the show. So if he wants to come back, I am glad someone was wise enough to offer him a job. I hope he thrives on As the World Turns.

Thanks for this interesting tidbit. I haven't been able to watch General Hospital since the change to digital (no converter box). I try to watch it online, but our connection is so slow. Alan was a real character on GH. I didn't realize that he was on the show for that long. I hope one day I will get to watch GH again. Thanks for your time.

I hope you can get a converter box or cable so you can watch good stuff on TV again!
