Why should the wedding ring be worn on the fourth finger?

There is a beautiful and convincing explanation given by the Chinese Legend…
Thumb represents your Parents
Second (Index) finger represents your Siblings
Middle finger represents your-Self
Fourth (Ring) finger represents your Life Partner
& the Last (Little) finger represents your children
Firstly, open your palms (face to face), bend the middle fingers and hold them together - back to back
Secondly, open and hold the remaining three fingers and the thumb - tip to tip
Now, try to separate your thumbs (representing the parents)…, they will open, because your parents are not destined to live with you lifelong, and have to leave you sooner or later.
Please join your thumbs as before and separate your Index fingers (representing siblings)…., they will also open, because your brothers and sisters will have their own families and will have to lead their own separate lives.
Now join the Index fingers and separate your Little fingers (representing your children)…., they will open too, because the children also will get married and settle down on their own some day.
Finally, join your Little fingers, and try to separate your Ring fingers (representing your spouse).
You will be surprised to see that you just CANNOT….., because Husband & Wife have to remain together all their lives - through thick and thin!!

I know that the fourth finger's veins go directly to the heart so people said that it is better to wear the ring in the fourth finger as it will get to the heart. I heard it from a couple of people and when I talked to a friend who is a doctor he said the same.

Yes, that's what I've learned from my mother. The wedding ring should be in the left fourth finger because the fourth finger in the left goes directly to our heart. The heart resembles love.

Yes, that’s what I have heard too. The fourth finger or ring finger is connected directly to our heart, so any ring representing love is worn on that finger. Even in Indian weddings, where a ring is exchanged more as a ceremonial gesture, the ring is worn later on the fourth finger. People might wear other rings on other fingers, but that particular ring is always worn on the fourth finger.

A pretty legend but complete rubbish, I'm afraid! I can separate my ring fingers (and all the others one by one as you suggest) and everyone else I have tried it with can, too. I agree that the ring fingers are slightly more difficult but it's certainly not impossible.
I tried it with a pianist and a guitarist (who you would expect to have more individual control of their fingers) and with people who don't play an instrument and all could do it.

I know it is a complete rubbish as you have pronounced it but it is a very beautiful legend which transforms us to our dream world of love, affection and pure feelings for our partner.
I am loading the pictorial representation.
