Down on the southern boarder sets El Paso, Texas, a city of about 736,000. Right across the board is Ciudad Juarez, Mexico which has a very high murder rate. In the last 18 month a reported 2,500 homicides took place. El Paso on the other hand only had 18 murders during the same time period. Compared to Baltimore, with 637,000 residents, had 234 homicides. El Paso is a very poor city with 27 percent of it's population living under the poverty line. So why has not the violence spilled over into El Paso?
Well I will give you my reasoning and it is actually two reasons. First is El Paso's gun laws or actually the lack there of. Ironically across the border you should not be able to get a gun, because they are illegal. Now I can hear it now, if we the US had tougher gun laws Ciudad Juarez would be as safe as El Paso. Are you sure, have you ever thought about El Paso would become as violated as Ciudad Jaurez if they had tougher gun laws.
Second reason is El Paso's high level of immigration. Cities with high level of immigration actually have very low levels of crime. San Diego, CA and Laredo, TX. Think about it why leave a country if you are going to make it just as violent as the country you left. With a population of El Paso that is very accepting of Hispanics you do not see the ethnic violence that plagued New York City during the early 1900's.
Alright I said enough now what do you think.

I think you make some great points here!
I also wonder why it isn't making the news much when the murder rate there is 138 per month, while the US troop fatality rate in Iraq was 33 per month.

Gew, I have been to El Paso, and it isn't worse place I have ever been to, and isn't the best. I don't recommend flying into the airport, it has one of the worse on-time rates in the country. I am sure that the fact that Texas doesn't mind killing people that commit murder as another reason for the low murder rate.
But, I wonder how many of your friends are going to completely ignor the fact that you said that higher immigration rates equals lower crime rates. It is almost like saying that illegal immigration is good for the country. I am not sure if this is what you are saying, but I can't wait to see what other people have to say about this.

Greatdebater do you really have nothing better to do than to see how many people may or may not ignore my statement on immigration. Let me guess you would enjoy to see me and one of my friend tire each others heads off. Well sorry to disappoint you but it will not happen.
