I am a Chinese girl. And I want to improve my English through watching friends, because some people say that friends is really a very fantastic soap opera and very suitable for you to improve your English. And I just wonder I need to watch how many times and there will be effect of improving my English. And what's more, should I watch it with Chinese subtitle, or English subtitle, or both, or none subtitle at all? Thank you very much for your advice! Have a nice day!

Friends is ok but I would advise you watch more kids' shows because they use simple english to start with. Nickelodeon is a good one to watch. :)

I agree. Friends is more mature, and they talk too fast for someone who's trying to learn. I think kids' shows are simplier and easier to grasp. Maybe when you're ready you can move on to more serious shows (not that Friends is one serious show, hahaha). But I'm not dissuading you from watching Friends. In fact it's one of my favorite shows. I just want you to enjoy them the way they really are, and watching with subtitles really isn't the way to go.

I would say join discussions like this more often, in that way you can improve your English. Don't you guys have subject in English? Your English seem pretty fine to me.

Note the low number in the star! If you want to learn to speak the language, I'd watch a movie or news program.

Just take it easy, keep on practicing and practicing, and try to gain yourself more opportunity to learn English, no matter by what means. And the most important, believe in yourself! You can make it!

Hi,there,Friends is a great and very interesting TV series, I love it too. As you said how many times you should watch it to be albe to improve your english, in my opinion, every time you watch the show ,your enlish skills will be enhanced, the more times you watch, the bigger progress you will make. And you'd better watch it with both the english subtitle and the chinese subtitle, I think that would be more efficient. Of coure, if you want to master english very well, then just by watching a TV show is not enough, you also should wacth all kinds of programmes and find some good articles, and read them aloud , if you can recite them one day, you will be surprised at your progress. Well, go for it, and wish you a big success.

Watching TV to improve your English is a good way especially those with sub-titles. But speaking to people who speaks English is a faster way. Converse with an English or an American is the best for they will correct your grammers if you do make mistakes. People are generally helpful if you are willing to learn the English language. But you must also practice on your vocabulary and spelling in addition to spoken English. Keep up your good work and you will succeed in the end. Your command of English is already very good.

Friends is ok, but they use a lot of slang. I live in Mexico and am an American, I've learned when they use sub titles in a movie or on TV they don't always get it correct and sometimes it's misleading, you would be just as well off to read the responses here, but look for the stars with the high numbers in them. Some people here don't use correct English either! Some are to lazy to use spell check and they are bad examples for you! Hope this will help you! If your trying to learn the speaking of the language you probably should listen to a news show like CNN or 60 minutes! tdemex

That’s one thing that may help you. You could watch some other series too as long as they’re English of course. Or you can also buy books with tapes so you can copy and practice. It’s better if you read, watch, and put it into practice.

I admire you for wanting to improve your English skills, but I don't think friends is the show to base that one. I would think watching the news would be better. Friends is a fantastic series, I admit I was addicted to it, but I there is a lot of slang verbage in it. A lot of humor that might be missed or miss understood. For instance, I watch British tv and sometimes have a hard time following because the humor and terminology from our countries are so different. I would think watching the news would be better or just pick up a book so you get proper English and sentance structure.

hi, english movies really helped me. try to get many Dvd's with english subtitles. if you have a laptop get a headphone for the hearing. when you listen to the audio in the headphone, you can easily understand the pronunciation, intonation, and if you come across a new word, make a note of it and refer it in dictionary. this will help your listening skills, vocabulary and the language. i usually do that, sometime those movie dialogues would be stuck in my mind, so i use that to frame sentences when i speak english. another thing that will help your writing is, take part in blogs, forums, discussions, observe how others frame sentences and bring out their ideas, then again if you see a new word, make a note and refer dictionary. if you have english- chinese dictionary in your country, buy that, cause that will help you to understand the meaning of the word in your own language. i m sure you can improve. im also trying to improve english.. i can help you on giving suggestions to improve. good luck

I have learn english when I have no choice to attend a industry training in US. I was lucky where my teacher are very patient on teach me. One day, they ask me to come on his house for a club party that it really surprise me because a lot of community there. They just ignored about who and what we come from. Sometime they just speak their language and they are really respect to listen. Somebody else tried to help us for translate our speak. Thanks to Jean Guys, California ... to help and give me a good motivation. Answer your question, I like to watch movie without subtitle as first. Especially on DVD movie, it has able to turn on or off very easy. Since I like to watch on cartoon movie (spongebob or dora) that they have used easy english to listen. Are you like to sing a English song?

Well, I learned English watching all kinds of Movies and Series ,I watched them with subs.and a few weeks after I didn' really need them anymore. I think it is a great way to learn a language,I learned the few word I know in Japanese thanks to Anime. Back to topic, yes of course you can watch Friend to learn English, but like a few others said, it's is a sitcom, and you will mostly learn funny words, or funny word combinations, if you watch it. I would recomend a drama or something, but not something like CSI, ER, or Police Dramas, since they often use medical/police terms, and you don't really need to know that righ now, right? I mean, it's not that urgent to know that kind of thinks in English. Also, I don't think a Series like Gilmore Girls would help you much eigther since they talk quite fast, and I think it would be a little hard to get along with it. Important is that is is a Serie/Movie/Whatever, that interests you! It's soooo much easier to learn with something you like! Cheers!

the point is not how many times, it should did you take it by your heart when you watch. to put a txt file containg the script when you are watching you the vedio. Also, another thing you need to notice is that every movie from america or any country has its own vocabulory to a related specific field, such as Friends's vocabulory concentrates more on life talking. So, can not confirm that you improve a lot even you pass Friends. Just keep moving, to learn it by heart. That is it. Keep going.
