Is it necessary to carry an ID card in your country and if so how do you feel about it? Is it something which has been newly introduced or something you are used to doing? Is an ID card about to be introduced to your country? We don't have to carry one here but remember that when I lived in England there was always talk about an ID card being introduced which a lot of people disagreed with as saw it as an infringement on their privacy.

It is the law that any citizens here carry their ID card for checking by the police as required. I have no problem carrying it around as I already have to carry lots of other stuffs around and an ID card more is nothing. The ID card is a proof that I am a citizen here.

As others have mentioned no forceable ID cards in the UK but the subject crops up nearly on a monthly basis in the national press.
I am sort of split on whether or not an ID card would be beneficial. In one way many residents in the UK already carry a form of ID, usually a driving licence so an additional ID card should not be an issue.
What is an issue for me and most people is the fact that if they force an ID card on us all our details will be stored on a central database which will link to other databases such as your health records. As the British Goverment has already shown that it is prone to losing sensitive computer data, the thought that a slip up in the system could allow all your personal details to fall into wrong hands is what puts me off the idea.

You are probably right, but then they will probably implement a half cocked system which will end up causing more issues than good all at the cost of the Tax Payer. Don't you just love those politicians who are meant to be serving the public rather than filling their own pockets.

The ID card has still not been introduced in England, which is probably because of public opinion.
People are constantly complaining about crime and the lack of law enforcement or police presence, yet the introduction of an ID card is objected to. I would have no problem carrying such a card. It may not help much in crime prevention, but that would only be decided after introduction.

Goodness Asylum, that debate in England was going strong six years ago and it is still going on! Thought they would have either dropped the idea by now or implemented it. I could never see why one would really object unless of a criminal mentality apart from the obvious danger of ID fraud which would really put me off.

Hi prashanthalva, we too have a lot of illegal immigrants from another country. The legal ones must carry ID and now and again the police have a swoop stopping cars to check papers. Here we are supposed to carry passports around but I don't as prefer the security of knowing that it is locked away, but bizarely we often need to produce it at the bank.

Hi thea09,
In my country (Malaysia), it is compulsory to bring an ID where ever you go. Since there is a lot of illegal immigrant here, police can pick you up and bring you to the police station to check your status.
Our ID has attached with chips and store a lot of information including your driving license. So, if you forget to bring your driving license, you can just show your ID and they have a reader to check it.
