Cashing in your jewelry?

It seems since atleast last year that it has become big business to cash in your old jewelry. I guess I can see if the prices are high & times are tough for many. But I wonder how many of those mail-in places scam you? or give you a low amount for your gold? People must being doing it as I see too many commercials on any given day for people to do it. I can't see why they don't just go to a local pawn shop, I bet one would get a better appraisal or rate that way. I dunno I can't imagine if I had or chose to do that, I would get the best price to a mail-in place nor get all the items I sent in back as they claim if I'm not happy with the price they give me. Have you ever cashed in your gold? Did you use one of those mail-in places? Or a pawn shop? Or are you like me and just hang onto things and perhaps pass the things you don't care for to your kids?

I know those Cash for Gold mail in places are rip offs. We were really broke a little while ago and ended up selling a gold coin we had. We took it to a person that buys and sells coins and paper currency. I guess we got an ok deal for it but I would never mail my valuables into a mail order place ever. Those places are rip off artists. Have a great day and happy myLotting!!!

i'd have to be really, really hard up for cash. they never give you what it's worth. the pawn shop up here offered me-get this-50 cents for 5 gold rings(and i know they were real). i can't post what i replied to that.

I cashed in what little jewelry I had during my divorce when I needed money for attorney fees. I went to jewelers and got good prices for them. A lot of those mail in things are scams. They will NOT give you what your jewelry is worth and may even mail back imitations of your stuff if you decide not to sell it. They ran a feature on it on the local news recently and the reporter found she got nearly twice as much for her jewelry when she took it to a local jeweler.

My local news station did a report on that mail in thing once and found out you can get at least twice as much if you bring your jewelry to a regular pawn shop, those mail in places don't scam you, but they don't give you what your jewelry is worth either, and you can't just ask for a price and get your jewelry back either... once you send it to them that's it, it's gone! I don't own jewelry, new or old, except my ring which I won't be selling any time soon!

That's what bugs me too is they say they'll mail it back if you are not happy with your payment. But you know they also don't show how much gold that old lady sent in to get over $500, was is several pounds worth? did she get credit for any gemstones? No idea but I agree they are looking for a sucker. I don't be hock'n my ring anytime soon either. It's the only thing I really wear anymore other than on special occasions.

cash4gold will give you way below the true value for your gold. You would be better off going to a pawn shop

I have a friend who recently cashed in gold from old jewelry and was able to get an $800.00 ring out of it. She got more if she picked out something vs. just taking the cash. I've rounded up my jewelry and plan to take it in soon as well. I don't wear it anymore anyway -- some of it's outdated and then there are earrings without matches. I've done a little research on this and from what I can find, most people advise not to send it in to places you see on TV. Instead, take it to a local jeweler or two and see what they'll offer you.
