I read in the New York Times that Irish Immigrants are heading back to America and their not the only ones with money in their banks to invest. New York seems to be an area of much interest but hasn't it always been. Also over in TExas, Mexican business owners are fleeing from Mexico to bring their businesses over here as well. I heard on NPR that these investors have no problem putting a 30% down payment on a house, will they be laying down history just as the Irish and Italian Immigrants did?

I would welcome immigrants who come here legally, especially those from our neighbor Mexico. Mexico has many people who are strong and determined and they are very family oriented. They work hard! They're willing to sacrifice creature comforts to support their families and expand their businesses--we could learn a lot from them if we would put aside our compulsion to accumulate material goods instead of saving our money for a rainy day. Back when my Irish ancestors came to America, they had to drop the "O" from their name in order to get work and try to speak without the Irish accent as best they could because everyone hated the Irish. They are hard-working people with good work ethics and I welcome them, too!

My grandmother used to tell me me the same sad tale, my Irish friend. My ancestors were advised to drop the "O" in front of their name before they even got off the boat so she told me how the "O" fell Overboard. It was a funny story about a funny name until I became old enough to understand prejudice and realized that the prejudice against the Irish back then robbed...and is still robbing...several generations of my family of their rightful name.

Frank McCourt's "Angela's Ashes" is one of my all time favorites, those people were Sur-vivors AND he lived to write about it, thats a awesome story. I agree, American's could stop consuming a lot less and maybe the whole "Freegan" lifestyle will take hold and change that.
