Crabbing with my friends

OK, many people found this very shocking, but I have never been crabbing before. I have lived on the east coast, within walking distance to some sort of body of water, most of my life. For 4 or 5 years I lived in Colorado where there is no water, but the majority of the rest of my life has been spent right on the Chesapeake Bay.
Now, I love to eat Chesapeake Bay Blue Crabs, I've practically been raised on them. My kids eat them, everyone eats them around here. And living so close to the water, it's VERY easy to catch your own crabs. All you need is a piece of string, some raw chicken (everyone always uses chicken necks because they're the cheapest) and a net. So yesterday, I went crabbing for the first time ever. We took out chicken, tied them to the string, put them in the water and waited for the crabs to start eating them. We also had a few traps that we put the chicken in, although you don't have to have those.
After a while, the lines will start to move when the crab tries to take the chicken. You run over with the net, S-L-O-W-L-Y pull the line up to the surface and then swing the net under the crab. If it's big enough to keep - the shell being the size of a soda can - you put it in the cooler for safekeeping. We had to let a LOT of them go because they were too small, and quite a few got away before we could get the net under them.
After about 5 hours we ended up with 4 crabs. That would have been one for each of us - not enough to even heat the water up for - so we let them go. It was fun though!
What type of things have you never done that is something it seems like everyone does where you live?

I had never heard of crabbing before you mentioned it today. I never knew that you could do it and that sounds very easy really. I don't like seafood but that does sound like a cheap and good way to eat seafood.
I live in Florida and when my friends come to visit I always take them out to eat fresh seafood as you can't get much fresher than when you live right by the ocean.
Have a great day and happy myLotting!!!

People go crabbing around here all the time. And if the crabs are biting, you can get a lot. Some people get a bushel or more in just a few hours. We weren't so lucky!
I've been to Fl a few times, going to be down there again next month. I can't wait for that vacation!

I can relate...
As you know, I live in Colorado. I have lived here for over 40 years. Which seems odd, since I'm only 29. But I digress. I am also just minutes from the foothills, less than an hour to the mountains.
I have gone skiing a total of one time. And I don't just mean one day on the slopes. I mean ONE TIME down the hill. And it wasn't even a whole hill! Some guy tripped me off the lift. Purely accidental, I'm sure... Probably his first time too! So my skiing experience was basically falling off a lift, helping this guy capture his runaway ski, crawling over a fence to the slope, and somehow getting to the bottom ... did I ski? walk? crawl? I don't recall. I was too busy complaining.

Oh, that so reminds me of one of the first times I went skiing... Snow skiing that is, I've never been water skiing (although that's about unheard of around here too!). This was probably the 2nd time we went skiing and my step-mother and step-sister were in the lift ahead of us, me and my dad were together. Neither my step-sister nor myself had been on a lift before - just the tow-rope on the bunny trails. My step-sister was about 8 and I was about 16. As my step-mother helps my step-sister off the lift, my step-sister falls and is so in my way. There's no way I can get off the lift without skiing right on top of her so I stayed on! They had to stop the whole thing, get my step-sister out of the way, then grab me while I jumped about 8-10 feet to the ground. It was way too funny and I just went scootin' on down the hill.
My father and I would always get lost too and end up on black or blue trails instead of green and blue trails. Oh, I loved it!
And that was just from 5 years living in Colorado! About 95% of my life has been here on the Atlantic coast and I've never water skied...

I've always lived close to water, so it's kinda funny that I've never done this before! It was a great time though!

Ahhh - that sounds like fun. I have a great-aunt ( I call her grandma) who lives in Jacksonville. When I was in high school, she wanted to invite me over to go crabbing with her. Unfortunately, I never found the time or the money to visit Jacksonville,FL. I have visited once, but not enough time to hang around and go crabbing with her.
It sounds fun though! Very fun!
Well, a lot of non-Californians (or non-southern californians) think that all of us here who live close to the coast know or have been surfing. But I have no CLUE at all how to surf. I'd like to learn though. Again, no money or time. *sigh*

I have also never been water-skiing, which is about unheard of for someone who has spent a good 30+ years this close to the water. I've been snow-skiing and only lived in Colorado for about 5 years...
