Is anyone on social security or SSI? I go through a lot of anxiety and social anxiety. I have a hard time in crowds of people. I have been on medication sense I was in my 20s. I was on one medication then now I am on 3 different ones. I go through depression and I have a skin disorder. I never thought about trying to get on social security till the other day. But my question is do you think I have grounds to get on social security or SSI?

I think that social security pertains to you not being able to work because of your disabilities. Typically, this would pertain to physical handicaps, not necessarily the type of disabilities that you have, but then again I dont pretend to be very knowledgable about social security :p

That is why I ask the questions because I am not sure if I could have gotten on it or not. Even if I can't get on it. It wouldn't be a big lose because I just wasn't sure if it was a good thing or bad thing to do. Thank you and have a great day.

My son has many mental handicaps, and he too has social anxiety. You'd never know it if you saw him...which is why many people judge others by what they see and not really know. He is on SSI and has been for many years. First you would have to apply for SSI, and then you would have to be seen by one of their psychiatrist to evaluate you and they would have to decide whether or not you have reason to be on SSI.

I wasn't sure if I could get the ssi or not. I know I go through it bad. I will hyperventalate real bad at times and it makes you feel like your going to pass out. I hate that feeling. I have tried to work before but I don't last long at a job because of the anxiety. And I just don't return to the work place. And I know they don't understand what I go through.

I think if you suffer from depression and you are unable to keep a job because you have to get up and take the pills when you should be working, you need to be on social security. However if you are able to work but you may have to change what job you have, then you should not be on social security. For instance, if you are out meeting the people as a waitress, or a cashier, but you can still use a register, you could work in the back. The thing is that in order to receive assistance, you have to be in a position where you no longer can work. For that you have to see your doctor and see what he says. I live in Canada and we have a similar rule for getting on permanent disability, you have to see the doctor and he will explain why.

I have to take medication several times a day. And 2 of my medications make me very tired. I have never used a register before. I use to work in a pottery when i was in my early 20s. The last time I tried to work was 5 years ago and I worked 3 days and couldn't do it any more. I try to pull myself through the anxiety when it gets bad but their are times its just way to hard. My doctor knows all about me. And I have been to 3 different doctors over the years and they all 3 know I have anxiety. Even my counselor knows I suffer from it.

I can't really relate because I'm not on benefits... but, since you're in the US, why not get the answer straight from the horse's mouth? http://www.socialsecurity.gov/pubs/10029.html provides access to Q&A's as well as a toll-free number you can call to have your questions answered. Whatever happens, I'm pretty sure you'll need something official from your Doctor proving that your medical conditions give enough grounds for a claim...

I signed up through an attorney for free information to see if I can get it. I am sure I will know something in the next couple days. My doctor will give them all information they need on me. And my counselor will give them what they ask for on me.I am sure I will find out soon. Thank you.

I think that if you are unable to work due to your social anxiety then you may be entitled to certain benefits but you would have to be diagnosed by your doctor and your doctor would have to speak on your behalf or enclose some kind of certificate. I have a problem with crowds myself. I was actually working and I was signed off work due to stress in December of 2004. I was on anti-depressents for a short while but then I came off them. I have been seeing a counsellor on a regular basis and she has been a tremendous help to me. I would advise you to pay a visit to your local office and find out all that you can. If you are entitled to something then it's important that you find out what that entitlement is. Good luck. Andrew

My doctor has seen me come in his office all messed up with the anxiety. And he would have to work with another medication to try to help me get myself back under control. My doctor wont take me off my medications. Every time I have tried to slow down on my medication I have to go back to my same dose or stronger. I hate living on medications. But the bad thing is I think some of this anxiety and depression runs through my family. My grandfather was very messed up from it and lived on the medication all his life. Thank you very much for your help.

My doctor has dealt with me for years and has had to jack my medication up because of the anxiety disorder. I have been to counseling many times over the anxiety. But their are times I haven't had the money to keep up with my counseling appointments. Its helps me at times. But I have had anxiety attacks right in front of my counselor and husband and never said anything because I try to fight them off myself.

I'm not but my boyfriend will be getting it soon. It can be very benficial to your income if you have a disabilit y of some sort it is definitely worth looking into. I think social security is something that just about everyone can get if they are persistent enough and disabled enough.

One of my daughters use to be on it when she was young because she was in a slow disability class and she was very slow at learning at the same pace as others. But I never looked into getting on it till a couple days ago. I filled out some paper work for free for an attorney to look over and to see what he thought. But I won't know anything till this week.
