I use truecrypt. It's open source and free. It creates a secure volume that can be open with a secret password. It mounts as a volume so you can move all your special files into it. Truecrypt has been around a long time, it's trusted and it's available for Windows and Linux. It aslo runs really well on Vista so you wont get into trouble using Microsoft's offerings that can only be used by Vista.
