i am faced with a daunting task to clean out all my favourites on my computer. some of the links are quite old and don't even work any more. i was wondering, does the amount of favourites you have stored in your computer slow it down any? anyways, back to cleaning out the favourites folders.

I don't clean by myself, i think my spouse will seldom do.I like to erase cookie and files in the internet property sometime.

Hi Cher, Your discussion here made me go and check out all my favorites places on the internet that I have saved. OMG! I have not only forgotten about many of the sites, but like you, I too have found that many of them are no longer online. I have many categories of favorites and it just may take me several days to go through all of them. I am not too sure if all of these links in our favorites will slow the PC down, but it is going to slow me down as I have to look through them and see if they are still online or even if I still need the links. I have also realized that in the past several months, I have not been adding to my favorites folders. I am not too sure why. Do you still use your favorite button as often as you used too? I guess this is summer cleaning...LOL

I don't, I should though... since each favourite link is a single file that's usually less than 1KB, depending on the cluster size your harddisk was formatted with, you could be wasting a lot of space if you have a lot of favourites. eg. a cluster size of 4KB means that each link, although 1KB, will consume 4KB of space on the harddisk...

I do clean off the old sites, those that I don't need or use so much any more. Depending on the size of the site, they may slow down the speed. I am not sure about that. But, before I delete, I have to meake sure that I don't delete some thing that's useful and hard to find !

I've done that exactly once since I first got the internet, way back in 1996! Guess it's time to do it again. I doubt very much that they'll slow down your computer, though. They are only links, not pages, so the only thing loading would be the links which are quite small in bits and bytes terms. But, thank you for the reminder! I'm using my laptop right now but prefer to use my desktop, which is dying. Actually, it's Internet Explorer that is dying. It refuses to load anything online except for MSN Messenger. I have to get everything off of it before my husband wipes it clean and does a reinstall so that will mean going through my favorites, too.
