Are you afraid of driving at night?

Just out of curiousity. To me, I'm pretty OK with it - as I've had lots of practice. I only get nervous on country roads (I'm so scared of hitting deer!) and in areas that I'm not really used to. What about you guys? Are you afraid of driving at night? If so, why? What kind of bad experiences have you had? And how do you go about avoiding driving at night? If not, why do you think you're not afraid of it?

I don't mind driving at night, however I will drive more slowly, especially on country roads I'm unfamiliar with that don't have streetlights. If you don't know the road, you don't know where the corners are. Heck, I drive more slowly on those types of road during daylight if I don't know them.

I also find I'm tending to drive more slowly as I get older.

It's definitely a good idea to be more cautious at night - there's more of a risk involved, so it's a very practical thing to do!

lol I can understand why you might be afraid. But I'm sure you're not old, and you're entirely capable of driving in the dark. That's what headlights are for.

In my opinion, the only time we should be afraid of driving is when we're drunk, sleepy, and having hallucinations.

I am not afraid but I detest driving at nights whereas it is very comfortable for me to drive in broad daylight. The thing which I hate most driving at night is when the vehicle coming from the opposite road flash lights and you get blinded for that brief period of time. When I am driving I like to "see" where I am steering my wheels and surely won't love to go blind even for that short time.

I know what you mean. Sometimes when there's someone behind you, and they go over a bump in the road, it looks as if they're flashing their brights at you. Other times they actually ARE flashing their brights at you for whatever reason. And that can get annoying. What I like to do is flip my mirror so that it's facing down (so I don't have to deal with being blinded by their lights) until they pass me.

There are some roads i dont like driving on at night as they are really narrow and no side rails at all and just a big ditch that goes way down and i hate driving on them at night. I don't have to really drive on them unless going to a friends house out their so its not to bad and all the other streets around town have lights and what night so its not to bad and it doesn't bother me at all as their is a lot of other people driving at night too around town. I have been driving for a while now so i am find with driving at night.

I can't say that I'm afraid of driving at night but more that time of day just approaching dark when I have to drive through the forest...the shadows are bad, my headlights can't cut through the darkness and it's very defficult to be able to see the road. There's always the chance of hitting a roo too and they can do some real damage...I'd hate to hit a roo, in the dark and have my car disabled ...that would be bad. I slow right down but there are still animals around and close to the road that I don't see till the last minute...luckily, they usually see me too.

I'm okay with it, though I don't really care for it, especially if it's on an unfamiliar road. I still remember when I got lost coming home from the airport some years ago (I took the wrong freeway). I immediately got off the first exit that I saw. My plan was to go back on the freeway heading in the opposite direction. Unfortunately I couldn't find any entrances back onto it. So I drove in the dark, not knowing where I was. To make matters worse, I saw a rather large body of water sparkling in the moonlight on the left of me. At that point I knew that I was on a levee road. Not only was I lost but I was afraid I'd drive myself right into the river. So I drove like a scared little old lady until I saw some familiar buildings and realized that I was heading downtown. Boy, was I relieved because I knew that I would be able to find my way home from there. Whew! LOL I've also had some near misses with idiots crossing the road illegally (AKA J walking) at night. Heck, it's even happened during the day. Which can be quite scary, because I would never want to hit and possibly kill a pedestrian. That right there would probably make me want to quit driving forever, even if it wasn't my fault.

I am not afraid of driving at night except for the fact that my vision isn't has good at night driving like it is during the day. I wear glasses but I do not feel as confident at night like I do during the day. If my husband and I are together he always drives at night and when we are on a road trip I will drive during the day most of the time.

Hi there~I like driving especially when I travel to somewhere`~ However, never say afraid but I just don't like driving at night, you know why?If I am driving at the country area, with most likely few chance to meet even a single car before or after you,say few miles,I will have a bit afraid.Regarding to driving in the urban area,I don't afraid but just don't like~as it's a bit lonely without crowd cars down in the streets`~lol~~ The reason I don't afraid coz is simple~I like drive and have good skill and enough care~~ Have a good day~~

Hi maezee, I hate to drive at night when it is dark as I don't like the lights of the oncoming cars glaring down on me, especially as lots of them have the illegal double headlights. I will drive locally where I know the road well but I will not drive to the village fifteen minutes away. The road has lots of bad bends and has had many many accidents on it and is very steep. I just do not feel confident to drive it in the dark, or any of the other mountain roads. Everyone knows I don't drive the mountains at night so we work round it.

I have never been afraid to drive at night I guess you could say but I have never been really big on it only because I have a lot of trouble seeing at night. I can see fine if I have a vehicle behind me OR one coming at me but I can't see anything when there is one behind AND one coming at me, I try to focus on the white line when I get in that situation where I have one behind me and one in front of me but sometimes it is very difficult. So for the most part I will let my husband do the driving at night.

I don't like to drive a car at night, because it made me more concentration on the road, and hard to see the lens.I think driving at night, it is difficult to drive.I will always avoid to drive at night.

If only I have my own car, I wouldn't mind driving it even at nighttime. So yeah, I'm not afraid of driving at night. But rest assured I won't join any drag race.

I'm not afraid of driving at night - I do it but I don't like it. I find that everytime i meet a vehicle with the lights turned on the change in brightness from darkish to light hurts my eyes. If I go with someone else i ask if they can drive otherwise I just do it myself and suck it up. It doesnt bug me nearly as much in the city or on a road with steady traffic. But i live in a pretty rural area with little traffic so driving around here rather bothers me and i end up with headaches after a night driving trip if i meet too many people.

This is a really good discussion and I know that driving is really important when it comes to everyday life, because everyone has to be able to get from point A to point B,and most people know how to drive, and I am sure that a lot of people have opinions when it comes to driving at night,I am sure there are some people who are afraid to drive at night, while others might not be afraid to drive at night, and I know that everyone is different, and that no two people have the same ideas, same opinions, and same preferences, and I know that the differences are what make people special and keep life from getting boring and dull,I know when it comes to me I do not like the dark because I am afraid of what might be out there, and I do not like driving at night because the headlights reflect off of my glasses and make it hard for me to see especially if it is raining or wet out,but I am not really afraid to drive at night, unless I am out somewhere I do not know, because I am incredibly bad at directions and I can get lost really easy and I am always afraid of getting lost and running out of gas, especially somewhere where I am not sure I am safe, have a great day, good luck with your life, and all of your mylotting goals, and Happy Posting.

Hey Maezee, I love to drive at night. I always plan all my drive-trip at night, so I can avoid traffic and the heat! However, you asked if I were afraid of unfimiliar locations and obviously I don't dare drive alone! There's not much wild deer we can find here, but I've seen in tv how dangerous can it be when the deer accidently run into your car.. Massive!

Hi I like to drive in late nights but some where in my mind i am afraid bcz usually in late nights traffic will be dull and we think to drive around 120 and above..But this seems to be dangerous at one moment so that our vechicle will be out of control..... For that i feel that driving night will be dangerous BE CAREFULL AND BE SAFE.............

I just started driving and I hate driving at night. I think the reason is I'm afraid of hitting something, or missing something, especially since I have my son in the car with me.

I tend to be more distracted when I drive at night, which keeps me on edge. I live in the country, so any flicker of light draws my attention and I think I am about to get hit or something. Also I dont know if its just me but after going tanning in a tanning bed without goggles my eyesight in the dark has definatly declined.
