Before they were famous

Last night, I was watching 'The Street,' on BBC1, with Bob Hoskins and Frances Barber. I always watch anything featuring Frances Barber, because, as well as being a really good actress, I knew her when she was still a university student. For a time, she was the steady girlfriend of my then husband's cousin, and she always said she was going to be a famous actress. Well, she made it, but what impressed us at the time was that she drank pints, not halves! These days, that's nothing new, but in the late 1970's, it was almost unheard of, and the older members of the family were scandalised. I also served members of the band Slade, in my grandmother's grocery shop, when they were still known as the In Betweens. One of the band members lived opposite the shop, and they often used to pop in for drinks and snacks. Unfortunately, I lost touch with them all long before they made their name, but we heard them practising, and we all hoped they would be discovered, as they were so talented. Did you know anyone before they were famous, and are you still in touch? Did you realise they were going to make their mark, or did their fame take you by surprise?

Hi Sandra, I really can't think of anyone I knew before they became famous which is amazing really, you'd think that someone would have made a bit of a name for themselves in something. As a child I did know some people who were already famous but that doesn't count. I expect my son will be famous one day for something, I see him in a dictator like role in some small country so then I'll be able to say I knew him before he was famous!

Tell me honestly, does he get his dictatorial streak from Mum or Dad? And I don't really think it's odd that nobody you knew hit the big time. I'd say that's more the norm, and my contact with future celebrities is vicarious, to say the least. Let's hope I get a few responses on thsi!

yeah i do. one very famous successful singer locally here used to be the neighbor of my cousin. She used to live a very old, small house made of wood because of poverty. she strived to be a singer to get out of poverty. now very successful my cousin has lose contact with that singer and she is actually an actress too now and successful too in that. i saw her once when she came to my counsin's house and i was there. i only saw her for a few times cause i don't always go my cousin's house before. but that singer also didn't expect to be that big now as she said on television. she just wanted to have money to serve food on the table. now she has a very big beautiful house. she can buy anything she wants now. but the bad thing is being famous, she has her share of controversies and gossips that really affected her personal life. anyways, she was able to recover from it now.
