Have you ever hit an animal with your car?

I hit a snake crossing the road when I was 16 and in Driver's Ed, but other than that I've never hit anything, knock on wood. We live 15-20 miles out of town, so there is always roadkilll on the side of the road, especially deer. I've seen a lot of dead racoons lately, not to mention dogs and cats. I can't imagine hitting a deer. That would have to do serious damage to a person's car. I was just curious if anyone has hit any animals and what happened to you, your car and the animal. I've heard of deer totally a car but getting up and running away itself, which is amazing.

yeah i have run over a cat not with a car but with my motorcycle. it was dark and i was driving fast. i have read never to put brakes on right away when driving fast, its dangerous. and even if i had braked i will still not miss it because it was really close. i swerved a little. i dont know if the cat lived, i did not looked back or stopped.

er..I don't have my drivers ed? But I'd probably start crying on the spot if I had a car and if my car had hit a poor animal..

I have hit a few things. Not on purpose though. First time was at night. I was coming around a curb and I hit a cat. At least I think i hit it and think it was a cat. Like i said it was dark. THe second was in the evening. A dog ran out in front of me and I couldn't stop in time. I felt so bad afterwards it made me drive below the speed limit for a long time. The third was a bird. I was driving and all of a sudden a bird flew straight into my windshield. Feathers were everywhere. It scared me so bad I was shaking.

As i haven't got my own car yet, i did not have that experience. But i have an experience that sitting in one of my friends car,he hit a duck by accident, we were screaming, and we rund away. . But if time can went back, we will definitely stop there and wait for the owner and say sorry.

I never hit any animals yet with my car and I don't wish it happened to me too....that will be a bad day if it happened to me. I will drive very carefully and sometimes when I saw stray dogs/cats along the middle of the road, I will slow down my car and let them pass the road first. It is better to drive slowly,no rushing.

I'm trying to think of what animals I've hit. I know that I hit a bird before. The darn thing was just standing in the middle of the road (or to be more precise the middle of the lane I was in). As I approached it, it didn't move, like most birds would, with the exception of crows, that is. But it wasn't a crow. As there were no vehicles coming in the oncoming lane (keeping in mind this is a two lane country road) I contemplated quickly as to whether or not I should swerve to miss it. But then it made me think that the bird might fly off in that direction at the last second and I'd hit him anyway. So I stayed where I was in hopes that the bird would move, but I ended up running right over it. Poor thing. I ran over a snake before too. By the time I realized it was a snake slithering across the road it was too late. I've had near misses with birds, cats, and even a dog and a couple of possums before. The dog ran out right in front of my vehicle. Fortunately I stomped on my brakes and was able to avoid him. Good thing too, because he was a big dog and could have caused a lot of damage. There's always road kill here. Skunks, raccoons, possums, chickens, you name it, we have it. Gross.

not me but my brother. I always sit in front during long distance travel. I was shocked when my brother hit a chicken and another time a dog. the car was in high speed and its never advisable to put on the break when the car is already that situation. I just don't get it why all of a sudden these animals would cross the street when the car is already there. oh well.

Large number of rattle snakes are killed on the road in th US every year only because the animal is rather slow. Whoever could say the same abour a black mamba- so swift on its, well, belly. How sad that the beautiful rattler meets its end in the middle of the road. One has had a number of such sad experiences. In the deserts, the chinkara gets hit especially at night. But I did not see the antilope lying on the road after getting a hit by my car a couple of years ago. It perhaps ran away once I got down to enquire its fate. Felt so much relieved for I had hit it by mistake since I was travelling at high speed. Similarly, just after twilight once about three years ago, I was negotiating a bend on a road with a divider full of 5 to 6 feet tall plants, when a black cow appeared from nowhere and got hit by the left fender of my car. I stopped to see the aminal's fate. But it had sped just as it had appeared. Life is precious. If we cannot give life to anyone, we have no right to take it, from anyone. Even by mistake. But is was nice of the originator of this discussion to have penned his/her thoughts on this topic. Such thoghts definitely make us much more aware of the preciousness of the biggest gift of the nature called life, of which we humans are most blessed product.

I have hit a racoon by accident. I felt really bad after I hit it but it ran across in front of my car so I couldn't stop from hitting it.

ive ran over a rat with my car before. i am certain that it was quite painless for the rat since we were going almost 50mph. when driving on roads you really have to watch for not just cars and people, but animals as well. there is a empty field near my house and there are constantly roadkill laying on the side of the road. just always be cautious of things running into your path.

I went a lot of years driving without hitting an animal (other than insects) then one day a bird landed right in front of my tire when my car was moving. I felt a thump and looked in the rearview mirror and saw feathers flying behind the car. Can't imagine why it would have done such a thing. maybe it wasn't well to begin with.

I had a large deer jump out in front of me once while I was on the way to work early one morning. It was 4 am or so and very foggy outside. I was about to cross a small bridge over a creek and the fog was very thick. Three deer jumped out in front of me and the last one to cross the road slammed straight into my hood and come across my windshield and fell back off of the car. I was driving a very small Pontiac Lemans hatchback. Needless to say it totaled my car and killed the deer and I had to walk the rest of the way to work in the fog with no flashlight! It was a very sucky day that day! Be thankful that you have not hit anything larger than a snake.
