What phrase do you use to ask somebody to repeat themselves?

Be it face to face or over the phone many times we do not hear the other person due to low voice or due to external disturbances. During childhood, I used to feel very awkward to ask somebody to repeat themselves. I usually ended by saying a loud "WHAT" to which I always got glaring expressions. Now I use terms like 'pardon'. Does anybody know or use any other word to ask someone to repeat what they just said?

"I beg your pardon" or "Pardon." sounds really British. If you want someone to repeat themselves, I may just say:"I'm sorry I didn't catch what you said. Could you please say it again?" Have a good day. ^_^

well, i usually say "i beg your pardon?" or "can you please repeat what you have said to me?" in a polite manner. there is nothing wrong in asking the person to repeat what he/she just said. this is just to make sure that you have received his/her message right =)
