With a legal separation, you are still married. No name change or stuff like that. With a divorce, you take your name back if you wish and the things are divided up and become his or hers. With separation it is still all up for grabs.

No and yes! An anulment of a marriage has to be done like within 24 or 48 hours or some sort of time limitation. If you get married for instance and find it was under some sort of pretense, you can get an anullment. It is as if you were never married. A divorce sticks with you forever though. A divorce is like a break of the contract of marriage... sort of... a divorce says, they did not honor their side so therefore it has to be cut, or destroyed.

A legal separation is just that, a contract in which you both agree to separate your assets and live separately. A divorce is again a contract through which the marriage becomes null and void. These are both actions that are done through the legal system and are subject to the laws of the state in which you live.

that's also what i think, just the other two there says...
when you are legally separated, meaning you are just separated but still married and can't marry another...
divorce, means marriage is already null and void...and you can marry other man again...
that's just how i understand it...

I think a separation is sort of like a legal "break" You are separtated from eachother, living separate lives, but you are still married to one another.

A legal separation is like the first step of a divorce, so to speak.
A legal separation does not put an end to the marriage, it is basicly a court order that outlines the legal rights and responsibilities of each spouse while they are living apart. Legally you remain married, while choosing to live sperate lives. While a divorce is the legal and permant end of a marriage.
Some reasons people choose the legal separation route are:
~It allows the couple some time apart, to conider if a divorce is what they really and truley want, while still having some legal protection with the division of assets, child custody etc..
~legal separaton allows for the continuation of cetain benefits (health insurance, etc..) that a divorce would bring to an end
~Some peoples religious beliefs do not condone divorce, but a legal separtaion allows both peopel to move on with their lives serpatly, while still being married
~In order to obtain military benefits or social security benefits for you self or your children, you must be married for at least ten years. A legal separtaion allows you to do this, while once again living separate lives and moving on.
