Making money online a FACT or FICTION?

I have heard gruesome stories of online marketing gone bad. It has been heartbreaking but many still wants to take chances. Why? Global economic crisis. Monthly residual income. EXTRA MONEY.
They have their own reason but what do you think is it a FACT that we can earn online? or just FICTION? How would we know?

For me it is because I have a fixed income and it is often hard to stretch that monthly check out to pay everything so I search for ways to make extra 
I do not believe the get rich quick people, as I have tried a few in the past and I made no money.
