Stop giving power to the trolls!

Alright that's it, I've had it! I am not sure if this has been said quite like this before or not, but if it has, I think it needs to be said again, and if it hasn't, then I think it needs to be said period! I am not extremely active here, mainly because I do not have a whole lot of time to spend here, but I do like to come to this site every now and then when I have some spare time just for fun. The problem is, this site is not nearly as fun as it used to be. As far as I can tell, the primary reason for this is because of trolls. However, and if this upsets people, so be it, I do not think it is the trolls in themselves that have caused this place to go downhill, but rather the general reaction to them. Let me explain: Through discussions that I have read I have seen many people express how upset some troll has made them, I have seen many people who contributed quality content to this site post discussions announcing that they were leaving due to trolls, and then those people have, indeed, left. I have seen flaming, obscene, rude and/or otherwise indecent, worthless discussions posted by trolls and have seen many good, decent users respond to these discussions made by these idiot trolls to tell the troll off, argue with the troll, etc. Don't you realize that when you respond to a troll you are playing right into his or her hands? By responding to the troll you are paying attention to them which is exactly what they want! Don't you realize that when you let a troll know that they have upset you, by posting a discussion about it, that again, you are giving the troll exactly what he or she wants? Don't you realize that if you leave this site just because you are sick of trolls, you are letting the trolls win? When you do any of these things, you are giving all of the power to the trolls! Stop giving power to the trolls! When they post a nasty discussion or response, just silently report it, do not respond in any way, hence giving the troll wanted attention. Do not let them get to you. Remember, they have no power over you unless you let them. They are just wasted space, anything they have to say about anything does not matter! If they do get to you, don't post a discussion about it which will let them know they got to you. Don't leave the site just because of a troll, don't let them win like that! Well, that's it for this rant. I hope I made my point.

Hi Betsy, I couldn't agree with you more. So many of us have been guilty of responding to these creatures. Have you ever had a troll come after you? I haven't but I saw one attack my best friend and get her kicked off mylot. How can that happen? So many of us tried to protect her and report the troll, but she ended up being kicked off. I bring this up simply because as much as I agree with you, I also understand a need to defend yourself. On the other hand, I don't see any point in tracking them and playing with them. leenie

Luckily, I have yet to have a troll ever come after me personally, at least not outright. I mean I have been responded to in a rude manner in a discussion here or there, but it always started and ended in that particular discussion. I have yet to be personally stalked by a troll, though I have seen it happen to others. I completely understand the need to defend oneself or a friend at times. But I when I say don't respond to trolls, what I am referring to are those who seem to seek out the trolls and can't resist posting a comeback or other retort to any ridiculous thing that they post. That is exactly the sort of attention these idiot trolls are looking for and therefore, exactly the reason why we should ignore them and not give them what they want. So basically, I think we are in agreement here.

You said it very nicely. I am not bothered by trolls, I don't let any of them get to me. If you don't let them have any power, they just go away.....Poof...

Now tell us how you really feel! LOL. I agree with you though. We should not lower ourselves to the level of those who have no concept of what it is to discuss things. We should not attack others for their views or beliefs. We can only offer opinion and personal experiences. We all have the right to speak our minds but we don't have the right to hurt someone or use language that is obscene jut to prove we can. Life goes on no matter what we think. We all occasionally need a sounding board because of things but we should never let it get out of hand. We all need to look in the mirror and face ourselves now and then.

You are so right. We do need to ignore them and not give them attention, as that is what they are wanting. They love attention, but if we all ignore them, and not respond to their discussions, then maybe they will finally get the message that they aren't welcome here. They are just pesky little annts and they need to be wquashed, before they can sink their fangs into anyone. I more than likely have rsponded to trolls discussions, not knowing they werw a troll. I need to check their profiles from now on. We get so many new members in here, and amonsgst them are probably trolls. This is one of the best discussion I have see all day, as you have really made sense. Good luck to you and happy mylotting.
