How many of you have cut back on your hair, skin or nail care needs?

Just out of curiosity how many of you have cut back on your hair, skin & nail care needs or have gone the do it yourself route? I am a licensed costmetologist & have noticed the industry slowing down with the recession...a lot of my 4-6 week clients seem to be waiting 8-10 weeks now to have things done. Its definitely considered a luxury especially these days! Just wondered what everyone's opinion was on this subject! Thanks!

Well, yes I have cut back. I used to get acrylics done every 2 weeks, and get my hair bleached blonde. Now for the past 6 or 7 years I have been bleaching it myself (it is really not that hard to do) and I gave up on the fake nails for now. I love being pampered and all but with 4 children and 1 person working it is near to impossible to afford that. Once the economy recovers some and maybe if I get a job again then I will go ahead and start getting my nails done again. I will probably see a stylist maybe twice a year to get a professional color job and hair cut but I will definitely touch up the roots between those time myself to save money. Besides, my naturally brown hair is slowly graying out to white so it is getting easier and easier to lighten it up every time. Have a nice day and happy myLotting!!

Yup. I've done that since last year, especially on hair and skin stuff. I used to have my hair done (trimmed/cut/colored) every month; now I do the coloring myself. The cut/trim is less frequent now, maybe 2 months once. And for skin - I'm using herbal-based products, which are not much publicised (such as Estee Lauder/Dermalogical). I found that these products are just as good, and much much cheaper.

I don't go to parlor much often. I'm lucky to visit a salon twice in a year. I do own pedicure, I seldom do have a manicure which I do myself. I have hair cut done every three months and it's my sister or my cousin who do the cutting. For my skin, I just use petroleum jelly every night and no more lotion during the day. That's all. I don't spend much on those things.

my hair is still too short to do anything to it. last time i cut it, i cut it into a very short pixie. it is growing out now, and i will eventually cut it again but not sure when or what. most likely into a bob.

Oh yeah, now i cut my own hair.........its cool.......i think i'm getting better at cutting my own hair. After recession, i won't have to worry about that expense anymore.

I am not sure about others but for sure I have cut down on my routine. I used to go for my manicure and pedicure once a month but I'm doing it myself now. Same goes for facial, everything is DIY (Do It Yourself) now. For hair cut, I've to go to the saloon but have cut down on frequency of visits. It's all because of recession, better safe some money than to be sorry later.

Its been over 6 mos. since I've had a real haircut. I went to a cosmotology school a couple of weeks ago and had my bangs trimmed but that's all. I have curly hair (the frizzy type) and no one around here cuts it very well (at least not that I know of). I read online about a lady in Memphis that was very good at cutting curly hair so I went to her in January. It was $40 (plus its about 80 miles away) so it was kind of expensive. I was going to make another appointment a few weeks ago but she had moved and it was $50 at the salon she's at now. I'm really having to watch my budget now so I don't know when I'll be able to go back to her. If it gets bad (my hair) I'll just have to settle for a cheaper haircut closer to home but for now I'll just wait and hope I can get back to her before too long.

Before I used to go to the beauty salon every month to have a body massage, foot spa and foot massage, facial treatments, manicure and pedicure. Since last year as the start of the recession, I am going to the salon every 2 months for these things. It might be a luxury for others but for me, I need to take care of myself as much as possible. There are times that I am the one doing the manicure and pedicure on myself.

i do feel it necessary to visit a parlor occasionally to recharge and replenish my wasted beauty lol. it is my own way of pampering/treating myself so i could start anew. but on the past months my expenses increased and i had to cut back on some. so what i did was limit my visits to the parlor and maximize the usage of anything whenever i do.. this is what i do on practically everything: cut back and maximize.. unique discussion. :)

I have started doing my own pedicures someting I TRULY miss!! And moved my acrylic fills to every 3 weeks instead of 2. At times it is hard to even justify that cost as well, but what are you going to do?? According to the shop I go to alot of folks here are cutting back on hair and nails, it is a tough time for al, I wish u well!

Yes, I think it has definitely been slowing down. I've never gone anywhere to get my nails done so nothing has changed there. But I do get my hair cut and highlighted. I wasn't going to get my hair highlighted this summer because I wanted to save money, but because I'm going to cousin's wedding in a week I decided to get it done so I look nice.

What a great discussion, and I have a goood response. I was one of those ladies that went to the beauty shop every 4 weeks to get a trim. I worn those fake nails from the nail experts. I bought the best product for your hair at the Beauty Shop. I am now a revised woman. I wait until the hair is out of control before the haircut. I polish my own nails, and I buy my shampoo from Wal-Mart. I had to do all of this to make ends meet for me. Great Discussion

Isn't it just terrible? I mean... I've cut down a lot for my health because I'm expecting a little girl soon ^_^ And most of the salons in my area are filled with chemicals in the air. But I mean... people deserve to get dolled up and just feel pretty. And my pocket can't afford it anymore. I'm back to brittle nails, plain brown hair and unshaped eyebrows... I miss my acrylics and highlights and waxing. Oh well...

I have, I do my own hair, my own nails, and will continue to do so. It is important to save where you can and not to waste. I fell the more that goes into savings now, the better. Things will get even tighter in the future. Have to be prepared.

I will be honest...I used to only get my hair done by a barber...I wouldn't dare to touch it myself... But now, with the way that money just seems so much harder to come by, I cut my own hair, even if it's not perfect...Though I must say I feel I do a pretty good job on it all by myself...lol... But yeah, I can definitely say I've completely cut back on getting my hair done...

I used to get mine cut about every three months or so, and I've been having to wait for about 6 months to make sure i have enough money to put back to do it. I don't get my nails done any more like I tried to do before. I also buy just regular finger nail polish instead of like the 4.00 bottles at sallys or such. I just haven't had the income to buy things like that.

I have. And I so need to get my hair foiled again but it costs soo much and unfortunaeately the hair and eyebrow waxing are things that just have to be put on hold?
