Fibroids are tumours that grow in the uterus(womb). They are not cancerous and are made up of muscle fibres. They can be as small as a pea to the size of a football. Atleast 20%-50% fo women will have fibroids in their life. It is rare in women under the age group og 20 and most common in women in their 30s and 40s. It tends to shrink after the menopause. They seem to be influenced by oestrogen. Oestrogen level is high in heavier women. In the past contraceptive pill was thought to increase the risk of fibroids. To prevent fibroids, keep your weight in check to minimize oestrogen levels in your body. Eat green vegetables and fruits and avoid red meat.
