Hasn't he played lots of very unusual characters? Edward Scissorhands, a pirate, the guy in Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas (about drugs), a murderous singing barber, a crazy cross-dressing director in Ed Wood, Willy Wonka... many very strange people. Did anyone else notice this? What do you think of it?

I have noticed. And must say he pulls each roll off nicely.

He does have unusual roles because he's not going with the main stream idea of normal. He does the roles that appeal the most to himself. I think that he does a great job with all of the roles. I can't think of one movie that he did where i did not believe his acting. I loved him in sleepy hollow and also in edward scissor hands. I believed that he was really the weird character.

Hi anna728, Johnny Depp is a very versatile actor and seems to just love playing the off the wall characters. He is the kind of actor that really immerses himself in a role and brings it to life. The films you mention are great examples of how good he can be. One movie that sticks out in my mind was Secret Window, a Stephen King adaption where Depp is just excellent in it and I would recommend it it if you have not seen it.

You know what... I TOO, have found myself questioning his choice in roles, but when I thought about it, I realized that perhaps he is challenging himself on a professional level. He is colorful and hot! LoL I was distraught by some of his roles such as Willy Wonka and his role as a murdering (and singing) barber, but then I was like....okay this guy is really putting himself out there. I TOTALLY LOVE HIS COURAGE....besides that I'm a total Tim Burton fan anyway.

that's true- it may be weird combinations of movies, but it does credit him as an actor

yeah it definitely would be hard as an actor to do well playing such a variety of characters
