I have a question about a question phrased.

This is the question. I recently started a topic about a local tradition which some may consider gruesome. It wasn't really a question, more a little gem of local history. I thought this wouldn't perhaps bring responses so kind of hid the actual point within a more general question which people could respond to with an answer. So the question I posed has now been answered without the responses picking up on the wonderful bit of tradition which I thought would be quite gripping. So my question now is which type of opening would draw you in, a posed question which leads onto the actual subject, or a straight 'can you believe this local tradition'. This question relates to a discussion I opened entitled 'What would you use to prettify the outside of your home' and lead on to the issue of decaptiated heads. I am curious to see which type of opening would grab your attention.

For me the way the question is posed is not an issue it is the way we interpret the words of the actual discussion. I have just raised a similar point on another discussion where I mentioned that you can word a discussion/comment one way which means something to you but others interpret those words differently and pick up on an element which may not be the one which you thought the discussion focused upon. It is part of why myLot can be so interesting because people see different things in discussions and so you can get a wide range of responses. Taking the discussion you mentioned, which as you know I responded to in not the way you intended, lol. When I read the discussion I interpreted it that the opening sentence posed a question, which was then followed by an interesting, yet gruesome part where you told us about a custom from a region in your country. This bit was followed by the words “What would you choose” and I took this as relating back to the initial sentence. As you can see I interpreted the emphasis of the discussion completely differently to what you expected and more than likely other members also had their own interpretation on the emphasis of the discussion. What was good was that I learnt something from what you told us about the custom. Would a more straight to the point discussion with no leading question work? Well I am sure you would get more responses which respond to what you want the focus of the discussion to be. But as you point out in this discussion going directly to the point may not bring responses where as a hiding it in a more general question will. So to finally answer your question I would say a posed question is more likely to get me in but then the chances are that I will interpret the discussion differently to what you expect, lol.
