My daughter will be 3 in October, as of now she does not talk in those short 3 word sentances that the doctors ask you about as they turn 2-years old for their developmental mile-stones. I have had people tell me to get her hearing checked because if they have any hear loss that can cuase the child to not pick up on the words. I was very concerned, I took her to the doctor to have them evaluate her. They checked her hearing perfact, checked inside her ears they are clean. They referred her to a speach theropist; however, there is a 2 month waiting list. I remember when I was pregnant with her the ultra sound should she had a cyst in her brain, they told me not to worry that often times it desolves on its own by the third trimester...it wasn't there on the thired trymester ultra sound; that was a relief. However, I wonder if that cyst could of had an effect on her speach. I did bring it up to the doctor but they said no because she is progressing normally with everything else. Could it be possible that the cyst may have caused some damage to a nerve used for talking? Does anyone have any ideas on how I can work with her. Since she not talking or communication I can't even potty train her because she will not pay attention to me when I talk to her. Sometimes I don't think she understand what I am saying. She will start to scream and throw a fit and I don't know what she wants, and when I try to give her something she screams louder and hits it away...All I can say is it is driving me crazy..

My oldest didn't talk til she was nearly 4. Is the place you have her on a waiting list thru your local early intervention service? like Birth-3? Sadly I'd say because she will be 3 shortly I would contact the school district as once the child turns 3 it is up to the school district to provide those services. So if you have to wait 2 months wich would bring you to September you may as well go thru the school district in my opinion because as fast as they'd do the evaluation & paperwork your daughter will be 3. til then what you can do is be very descriptive in the things you are saying to her. Like ... bring me your toy instead bring me your pink and white dolly or bring me pink dolly. Add details but simplistically, like the "see jane run" sentances. Also read those type of books to her. If she wants a drink if she points or grunts ect ask her to say.... "want drink" or "more drink" ask her to repeat it a couple of times even if it's not perfect give her credit for trying and then give her what she wanted. And one last thing look online and look for a site with American Sign Language on there and learn the signs for : Eat, Drink, Stop, All Done, More ect and those will help you fill in the blanks of what your child cannot say at this time. WOW, thank you for all the great advice. I am not sure where it is from the Doctor did a referral for it and when I called to make the oppointment they told me it was a 2 month waiting list, call back in about a month. She loves Dora, my husband got her a few DVD's of Dora, and she is starting to mimic some words here and there on it...thats a good sign right?? Will the schools do anything since she is not potty trained, she has a short attention span for learning...unless it is watching Dora she'll do that all day...lol
