As a bipolar sufferer myself I am always on the look for the latest information regarding relief from the symptoms of Bipolar Disorder. There are many drugs out there that can help stabilize patients, but often these come along with serious side effects. Lithium for example is a popular drug that has been used for treatment of this disorder. Side effects include restlessness, dehydration and weight gain. Many antidepressants can actually cause an increase in suicidal thoughts and tendencies which is exactly the opposite of what they should do!
In recent years the National Institute of Mental Health has released information about studies investigating the effectiveness of Omega-3 fatty acids in the treatment of Bipolar Disorder. For those of you who don't know Omega-3 fatty acids can be found in foods such as fish and walnuts and have been used to help improve general brain function. Now studies are being done to see how these work for people with Bipolar Disorder. Results have been mixed, but some experts believe that fish oil may be the cure to Bipolar Disorder. One gram of fish oil taken daily with your normal medications can help boost their effectiveness and reduce the mood swings associated with Bipolar Disorder according to some.
You should of course contact your doctor before attempting any new treatment. The effects of Omega-3 fatty acids are still under investigation. You can purchase fish oil in liquid or pill form anywhere vitamins are sold.
