I was told I was bipolar. If it is true it is a very mild type of the condition. I do seem to go through phases of depression...and there are times I am way to hyper as well, but nothing like what I have observed up close and personal or on documentaries like you describe. Mostly I know from dealing with my son. Thanks for responding gabs.

I have a cousin and a niece who are struggling with this, but neither one of them lives close to me.

Hi Dawn....it does seem to run in families. My ex husband definately is and my son WAS on disability for it. He stopped that and went to work...in construction. I was very proud of him for that. He does fine mostly it is the self medicating that makes his life so difficult. It makes his symptoms that much more difficult to manage. And it is beginning to take a physical toll now that he's getting older.

Hello again! My father was bipolar, and everyone on his side of the family either suffers from severe depression, or is bipolar. It's not a pleasant legacy. Joanne

Actually I have bipolar disorder. I don't know if you are the one with the disorder, but it sounds like you are a family member of someone. I personally have hurt my family over and over as a result of my disorder. I'm sure right now you're confused and obviously you're looking for support from others. One thing I can say is if you do know someone with Bipolar Disorder it's a difficult road ahead. Sometimes your loved one may say or do things that don't make sense to you and can be downright hurtful. The best I can tell you is to try to be understanding. Encourage them to get treatment if they aren't already. You may also be able to attend a support group with them that will not only give them tools on how to deal with their disorder, but may tell you how to help them as well. Try not to belittle their emotions. Sometimes when I'm genuinely depressed having someone say that I should just get over it because it's just part of my disease is a slap in the face. Try to be understanding of their emotions and talk them through it if that's what they want. Give your loved one their space when they need it, but at the same time keep an eye on them to make sure they are okay. I hope this helps even a little bit and I wish you the best of luck.

I have a close friend with bi polar disorder. It seems bi polar people are usually very talented and smart people. They can however be very mean and hurtful. They are usually perscribed lithium as a medication but often in doses that are nearly intolerable to take. The lithium causes a nausious feeling, often uncontrollable shaking fits and lethargy, so they stop taking it. This makes them a risk in the work force because they can become violent. Since bi polar is an unvisible physical illness you can be in danger and not know it. Bi polar people have serious mood swings from deep depression to euphoriia. They can be alot of fun or a major problem.
